Slow Down this Fall

Easing your pace can sometimes seem like a daunting or even an impossible task. Fortunately, the natural world extends an invitation to do exactly that each autumn when cooler temperatures and less daylight urge you to rest and recharge.

Slowing down is not an act of laziness. Rather, reducing the speed at which you travel through life—physically, mentally, and emotionally—creates space.

Some ideas from Yoga Journal to help you slow your momentum:

* Linger at the farmers market and truly observe the abundance of harvest season (The bounty! The colors!)
* Window shop with a warm beverage in hand.
* Get cozy – break out the socks, sweaters and blankets of fall.
* Hike with ample time to gawk at the color and movement of the leaves.
* Cook foods that require patience, such as soups, braises, and roasts.
* Brew a cup of tea or coffee. Observe the ancient nature of the act.
* Sit and let your thoughts take you nowhere (and everywhere).
* Spend time outside taking in the season’s scents.
* Walk or jump into leaf piles (again and again and again).
* Pick fruit. Savor it immediately or save it for baking.
* Try your hand at handiwork such as knitting, embroidery or pressing flowers.
* Watch the sun slowly come up (or go down).
* Make hot chocolate from scratch.
* Sit by a fire in the crisp air.
* Switch up your playlists. Peruse some online autumnal playlists and see what sounds others associate with the season.
* Candles, candles, candles.
* Visit a pumpkin patch or apple orchard.
* Ease into your mornings – preferably without your phone.
* Journal before bed to clear your mind of cobwebs.
* Invite a loved one into the kitchen and prepare a meal together.
* Select a nearby tree and take a photo of it each day. Watch it change through the season.
* Try a restorative yoga practice, or outdoor yoga.
* Take a staycation – the Midwest is so beautiful this time of year!! Consider a scenic drive.

Grounding

The idea of “feeling grounded” is not just yoga teacher speak; it’s actually an important concept when it comes to our health and well-being.

Grounding forms a foundation and is a process of dynamic contact with the Earth. It allows us to become solidly real – present in the here and now. Without grounding we are unstable, we lose our center, our attention wanders from the present moment. Many people who cannot find their true path in life have simply not yet found their ground. When we are grounded, we are humble and close to the Earth. We live simply, in a state of grace.

When we spend too much time thinking, our energy is directed upwards into our minds. This creates imbalance and stress. It can make us feel scattered and confused. We can use yoga to help bring our focus back to our body and its connection to the earth.

Here are a couple of poses to try this week:

Easy Pose - your sit bones are actually pressing into the ground and you can feel the connection with the earth beneath you.

Mountain - gives you the chance to feel steady and unshakable, like a mountain.

Warrior II - holding this pose for a couple of minutes can help you feel stable and steady, both physically and emotionally.

Triangle - it has the same effects as Warrior II. Work to smooth out and steady your breath.

Tree - the balance aspect of this pose helps to calm down a busy mind and gives you the opportunity to surrender to the moment.

Trees are a wonderful sources of grounding inspiration!!

Resting is the most common grounding practice. Sleeping brings the body to rest and stillness. Grounding at the end of the day regenerates us for the following day.

We would love to have you join us this week for a grounding yoga practice (indoor and outdoor) or for a meditative walk on Saturday (see details below).

FALL Equinox and HIKES

Fall Equinox occurred this past Sunday morning. We experienced near equal amounts of day and night. It's a powerful time to release stagnant energies, reflect on our inner growth, set new intentions and prepare for the colder, more introspective months ahead. It's a good time to reassess how your daily actions influence your overall well-being.

The cooler weather and changing colors make me want to get outside as much as possible in the Fall. Please check below for some walks and hikes in the next few weeks. I also wanted to remind you of a group that I hike with - Trailbound Trips. They offer group hikes for women, several times a week (Saturdays too). It's a great way to explore Lake County Forest Preserves with others :)

Should We Multitask?

Neuroscientists have proved that doing more than one thing at a time literally drains our brains of vital energy. Multitasking has been shown in numerous studies to increase stress hormones in our bodies that can feel like sped up energy in our systems.

If we want to feel more rested during our days and be able to stay focused and complete, we need to adopt the practice of doing one thing at a time. When we just do that one activity, we express our true nature, and even though we are all pressed for time, tangible magic unfolds when we give ourselves the gift of doing one thing at a time.

Practice bringing your full attention to whatever activity you're engaged in. Set a simple intention to be present with that single activity, trying to only do that action. Just walk. Just sip tea. Just read. Just give your spouse, neighbor or child your full attention. Just rest. Just BE.

Each time we practice bringing our full attention to a single activity, we can access the nourishment and restoration that comes with being in the present. It is there that we are given the opportunity to downshift and relax!!

Resting from the Outside IN

One of the main reasons we are disconnected from our inherent inner rhythms is because we are so disconnected from nature.

Cultivating a relationship to nature is integral to resting well. We are part of the natural world. Research shows that spending time in nature makes us healthier, restores our weariness and provides us with the foundation to rest.

This week, if possible, place your hands, feet or body directly on the ground outside. Take a walk on the beach, stroll through a park, rest your hands on a tree or lie down on the earth. Mediate on a flower or tend to your plants or garden.

Notice any shifts in your body, your breath. What do you feel in your heart?

Our circadian rhythm, the 24 hour cycle, helps guide our bodies to let them know when to sleep and when to be awake. This rhythm uses light and dark signals from our environment to predict what to do in the future: when to prepare you to be active and when to prepare you to sleep. When our rhythm is disrupted, it negatively affects our efforts to rest.

A simple way to restore your circadian rhythm is to wake up at the same time every day. Wake up as close to sunrise as you can. Try to get as much sunlight as possible first thing in the morning.

Practice listening to the sounds of nature around you this month. Join us on Saturdays in Central Park for yoga and some walks afterwards and on Friday, Sept 20th for Beach Yoga.

Our Struggle to Rest

If you’re struggling to slow down, you’re not alone.

If it feels like a fight to stay present and be with yourself, you’re not alone.

If you’re operating in survival mode most of the time, you’re not alone.

If you know on some level that you need renewal but can’t seem to prioritize it, you’re not alone.

A sense of urgency can permeate our lives. Feeling like there is not enough time. We can push ourselves until our bodies give out. We rush through, past and over our lives with abandon, rarely, if ever, pausing to ask ourselves – is this really how I want to live?

Urgency does not have to be our baseline! We can change. We can learn to slow down. We can learn to embody presence. We can learn to rest.

Read through the following and notice what resonates with you. I feel rested when:

I release a long, slow exhale
I allow myself to go at a pace that feels nourishing to my body
when my eyes are relaxed
when my body feels a sense of ease
when I am attuned to my partner, children or nature
when I am moving in gentleness
when my body and thoughts are congruent

What does rest feel like in your life, in your body these days? Honor your body’s signals that it’s had enough, that it’s ready for rest.

Choosing to Rest

Resting is one of the most impactful practices we can adopt for self-compassion, emotional well-being, collective care and environmental repair. When we take a few minutes each day to pause, to feel our exhales, to listen to the sounds that are present or to notice the way light bends around a corner, we are engaging in a subversive act of reclaiming the innate wisdom within our bodies and within the natural world.

Our bodies need rest. Our minds need rest. Our hearts need rest. Our relationships need rest. Our creativity needs rest. Our culture needs rest. Our Earth needs rest.

Rest is a practice, and practices require consistency, dedication and a willingness to show up. Even when you’re too busy. Especially when you’re too busy. Rest is a cumulative practice. We learn through practices that are repeatable and through our devotion to keep up with our practice when it’s tough to rest.

Making time for rest helps us curb chronic anxiety and stress by engaging the parasympathetic nervous system. Choosing to rest will help us move through life with more ease, compassion, grace and steadiness.

Try this One Minute Rest – take a minute, seated or standing, to bring awareness to where you are. Notice the light, colors, textures and shape of the objects or life around you. Listen to the sounds around you – wind blowing, dog barking, child laughing or cars driving by. Locate yourself in this moment for a minute. Studies show that even a few moments of present time awareness can bring our brains and bodies into a state of calm, a state of rest. Repeat as often as needed throughout your day.

Finding and Keeping Your Balance

According to the CDC, every second of every day, an older adults falls and it’s the leading cause of injury and injury related death in older people. The fallout from falling also extends to people leading smaller lives, restricting themselves from activities and social interactions and ultimately moving less, getting weaker and impairing their balance.

In some ways, society accepts this as just the price of aging. The book I just finished, Built to Move by Kelly Starrett and Juliet Starrett, rejects this idea – balance can be retained and regained!

How steady you are on your feet depends on three main factors: your inner ear, sensory receptors in the muscles, tendons, fascia and joints and eyesight. Balance depends on an interchange of information between sensory elements and mechanical elements in the body. The brain integrates data from sources all the way down at your feet and all the way up to your eyes to enable you to stay stable without even thinking about it.

The brain is dependent on intel from various places within the body. Our feet are the foundation upon which our whole body weight sits, the feet have so much to tell us. To contribute to balance in the way they’re meant to, the feet need to be both strong and super sensitive to stimuli.

The ankles also play an important role in balance, too. Like the feet, they have a high concentration of sensors for letting the brain know where you are in space. The ankles also must have a good range of motion so they can dexterously respond to things underfoot like rocks on a trail or shifting sand on a beach, that threaten to topple us over.

Balance affects just about every aspect of our mobility. Join us for class this week to strengthen your feet, ankles and quads 😊

Hope you are enjoying these beautiful July days. I've spent the last few weeks spending time with family and friends, browsing at Farmer's Markets (mostly the dogs :)), going to concerts, reading on the porch and being outside.

Please check the upcoming yoga schedule as 2 new salt cave dates were added (8/9 and 9/13) and I'm subbing several classes over the next few weeks. There is also a beach yoga in Aug taught by Trillium owner, Sara - more details to follow :)

Outward/Inward Happiness

Think about how you normally spend your days — and then think about whether that’s making you happy.
Work, social media, messaging, eating & drinking, shopping. All of these activities can give you some happiness. The most important thing is the way that the activity is done — with full appreciation, and without needing more and more and more. If you can approach anything this way, then the outward activity can lead to happiness.

Here are a few outward activities that lead me to more happiness than most activities:

Being outdoors and in nature
Moving my body
Eating (healthy) food
Taking care of myself
Connecting with others in an authentic way
Doing an act of service for others
Smiling, laughing, dancing, playing

Some activities can lead to greater happiness — if we fully allow them to. If we do them like we do most things, rushing through them without much appreciation, then they won’t have a big effect.

Many of the outward happiness activities, are related to some inward experience. And that’s the most important thing — the real happiness comes from what’s happening inwardly.

Here are some inward activities you’ll notice from the list above:
Being delighted by movement, music, connecting with others
Caring for yourself or others
Having fun, playing, smiling
Being fully in the present moment
Being grateful, being appreciative
Loving
Feeling connected to others, yourself, or the world around you

How would you like to practice and make the most of the remaining summer?

Yoga with Friends

Yoga is a truly great place to meet and connect with people. It has filled my life with many true friendships.

Yoga helps create union with one another and a sense of togetherness. Through collective breath and movement in class, yoga helps create bonds with the people around you like none other.

Once class is over, there’s this overall feeling of oneness, connection, and collaborative energy. Next time you're in class:

Spark up a conversation with your yogi neighbors, talk to people after class. Break out of your shell, be brave, allow yourself to be vulnerable and open. We are all connected and have at least one thing in common - our love for yoga and our dedication to our practice. There is always space in our lives for new positive people.

Yoga can be a powerful tool to foster stronger mental health and emotional well-being by reducing feelings of isolation and fostering a sense of belonging and support.

If yoga is something you love, share it with your family and your friends. Bring a friend or family member (new to yoga or Trillium) to the studio for Tuesday nights class for FREE.
