working in my medicinal plants gardens has been the most healing experience, I've had in the last 7 years. The soil, the scents, the sights and the sounds (birds, insects, frogs, the sound of the leaves moving in the wind)...I feel blessed.

It's a powerful medicine and a beautiful plant I am growing on my farm. It seems it would be effective in healing Lyme disease, as it was historically used for syphilis (spirochetes). In any case it is an exclellent herb to support any healing.

So it's now scientifically proved that taking turmeric in food (mixed with fat) is the only way the spice actually works as medicine. Don't waste your money on turmeric supplements.

Bold health claims have been made for the power of turmeric. Is there anything in them, asks Michael Mosley.

Rose of Sharon - beautiful and easy to grow

The Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) is a common ornamental shrub that is hardy, easy to grow and widely cultivated. At the same time few people are aware of its edible and medicinal properties. One of my students recently asked me if it had similar uses to the more common Hibiscus. While I cannot say the two are identical I certainly can say that the Rose of Sharon is worth knowing more about. The young leaves can be eaten fresh or cooked as a slightly slimy potherb (think Okra light) and the fresh flowers can also be eaten and make beautiful garnishes on a fruit salad or on your dinner plate. The dried flowers make a mucilaginous tea useful for soothing gastric, intestinal or bladder irritation, diarrhea and UTIs. In Chinese medicine the flower is known as Mu Jin Hua and is used to relieve damp heat in the stomach (gastritis, gastric ulcer), as a diuretic and to treat GERD . The flower decoction can also be made into a buffered saline eyewash for irritation of the eye. The root or stem bark is known as Mu Jin Gen and the decoction has historically been used to treat topical fungal infections such as athletes foot, to stop intestinal bleeding and hemoptysis (coughing blood). This lovely perennial shrub is another example of plants commonly used in other parts of the world that we grow here as ornamentals and have forgotten that they have many other uses as well.
