Why does concrete settle?

Climate can be a big factor. Freezing and thawing causes slabs to expand when frost is in the ground. Frost causes concrete to heave or raise. When the ground thaws, the concrete will settle again, but many times not to where it was originally. This causes tripping hazards between shifting slabs.
Addressing this is especially important in apartment complexes, shopping malls, restaurants, and hospitals and many other public use areas. The American Disability Act defines a trip hazard as anything greater than 1/4” of vertical change at any joint or crack. This law strictly mandates the repair of any such hazards. Lifting uneven slabs may be the best way to eliminate your liability!
