We took some time off from our series during the holidays but we’re back at it this month with myths about child abuse. The mission of the The Dandelion Foundation is to prevent child abuse and family violence through education and awareness. We hope this series of posts help educate you!

MYTH: All children know when to speak up about abuse.

TRUTH: Only 1 in 10 kids ever tell anyone about their abuse. Research has found that most child victims delay or never disclose child sexual abuse to friends, family or authorities. It is important for parents and caregivers to create safe spaces for kids to talk about anything and everything.

It’s – We are wrapping up our myths on domestic violence today. We are excited to start a new series in November.

MYTH: Those in a relationship where domestic violence is happening should just seek couples counseling.
TRUTH: Couples counseling should not occur if domestic violence is present. Anger management is recommended for the abuser and support groups or individual counseling is recommended for the victim.

According to an article put out by The National Voice of Domestic Violence “Counseling with the abusive person can very well leave you in a more vulnerable state. It can leave you more susceptible to the abusive person’s attacks. It will leave you feeling like you’re to blame for the abuse - If you want to go to counseling, consider going to individual therapy, so that you can gain clarity, peace, strength and freedom.”

It’s

MYTH: Victims of domestic violence don’t need or want my help.
TRUTH: Domestic violence often includes severe isolation from family, friends and loved ones. Victims need support and love, but it has to be up to them to choose when to leave.

According to the the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence a recent study of intimate partner homicides found 20% of homicide victims were not the domestic violence victims themselves, but family members, friends, neighbors, persons who intervened, law enforcement responders, or bystanders. Victims feel responsible for the threats made to their family and loved ones and often don’t reach out in fear that those threats will be carried out. If your loved one is experiencing domestic violence it has to be up to them to choose when they leave and they will determine when it is the best/safest time for them. They will need support when that time comes, otherwise it will be much easier to return to the relationship.

It’s !

MYTH: Some people believe that domestic violence only happens to a certain “type” of person.
TRUTH: In reality, domestic violence does not discriminate. It affects people of ALL classes, races, ages, genders, etc.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence 39.2% of Montana women and 32.6% of Montana men experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetime.

We are starting a new series called . October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We will spend the next four Mondays looking at myths related to domestic violence.

MYTH: People who stay in relationships where domestic violence is occurring are stupid.
TRUTH: People stay for so many reasons – jobs, food, shelter, kids, pets, threats to family and friends – they feel the dangers of leaving are far greater than staying.

According to the Montana Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (MCADSV), money is often a tool that abusers use to establish total control in their relationships. An abusive partner might take all measures to ensure that a victim is entirely financially dependent on the abuser to prevent the victim from leaving. Personal safety and economic security are inextricably linked for victims of domestic violence. Access to resources that increase economic stability are essential in rebuilding one’s life after abuse.
