Last week, nearly all employees at the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) who oversee the implementation of the federal special education law, called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), received Reduction in Force (RIF) notices. This means their positions are currently scheduled to be completely eliminated on or shortly after December 9th, 2025.

Over the past few days, we have heard from many families that they are deeply concerned about the loss of expertise that supports their children’s education. As Montana’s PTI, we serve as one of the voices of families who rely on OSEP’s guidance and oversight to ensure their children’s rights under IDEA are upheld.

The OSEP staff, many of whom are families of students with disabilities themselves, protect and support children with disabilities, their families, and the states.

MEC wants to make certain that accurate information is shared about the possible effects this RIF could have on ensuring that families, schools, and states receive the services and guidance they need to provide students with disabilities a free, appropriate public education (FAPE).

Happy Saturday! I'm a day late, but who's counting when you're having the time of your life at camp? Miss Lou was so exhausted, she went home and snoozed the day away. We just wrapped up our 2-day micro camp for fall, and let me tell you, it was a blast! We had tiny tots and bigger kids running wild, doing arts and crafts, and just being their awesome selves. It was a total riot! We know days off can be tough for our kiddos and their families, but that's why we're here - to support our families so they can do their thing, whether that's school, work, or just adulting in general. We're all about helping our kiddos build relationships, have playdates, and just have fun being kids. And guess what? We all did. Thanks to our amazing families for making this happen, and we can't wait to do it all again in December!

Peace Place was totally wild today, kicking off our first ever fall camp extravaganza. First day of camp, done and dusted. The gym is now a ghost town and the toys are catching some serious Zs. Classroom toys are squeaky clean and ready to party again tomorrow morning.
