During American Heart Month, we will be sharing information about common heart conditions that impact many Americans. Today we are focusing on Heart Failure.

Heart failure occurs when the heart has sustained damage or stress over time, and that damage leaves the heart functioning inefficiently. During heart failure, the heart muscle may be too stiff or weak to pump enough blood around the body. In some cases, the heart may try to overcompensate for this weakness by beating a lot faster to move enough blood around the body. Heart failure may result in symptoms of fatigue, swelling or fluid retention, shortness of breath, nausea, or chest pain.

To treat heart failure, your doctor may prescribe you medications including beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, and diuretics (water pills). In some cases, your doctor may recommend implanting a pacing device, such as a biventricular pacemaker or an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).

To reduce your risk of heart failure, maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle is always your best option. Visit https://cmhvi406.com/heart-failure for more information on this condition, and to see the services provided by the Central Montana Heart and Vascular Institute.

During American Heart month, we will be sharing information about common heart conditions that impact many Americans, starting with Atrial Fibrillation (AFib).

Atrial fibrillation is a quivering or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related complications. At least 2.7 million Americans are living with AFib.

Normally, your heart contracts and relaxes to a regular beat. In atrial fibrillation, the upper chambers of the heart (the atria) beat irregularly (quiver) instead of beating effectively to move blood into the ventricles.

Sometimes people with AFib have no symptoms and their condition is only detectable upon physical examination. Others may experience fatigue, irregular heartbeat, “thumping” in the chest, dizziness, shortness of breath and anxiety, faintness, sweating, or chest pain.Treatment options for AFib may include medications, nonsurgical procedures, or surgical procedures.

To reduce your risk for AFib, maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle is always your best option. Visit https://cmhvi406.com/atrial-fibrillation for more information on this condition, and to see the services provided by the Central Montana Heart and Vascular Institute.

Get to know the staff at Central Montana Heart and Vascular Institute!

Kami is from the Missoula/ Bitterroot area. I'm a true Montana native who has raised two incredible sons while managing the many adventures that come with livestock and rural life. With 25 years in the medical field, building a career grounded in compassion, leadership, and service. My passion lies in advocating for patients and supporting the teams that care for them.

When not in the office, you will find me outdoors from hiking, kayaking, soaking up the sunshine in a hot spring or taking the SXS deep into the mountains off grid camping with my three dogs and enjoying life's adventures with my partner in crime where I feel most at home.

Get to know the provider team at the Central Montana Heart and Vascular Institute!

Megan Brinka is a DNP from Great Falls, MT. She found her love for cardiovascular medicine when she started working in the Progressive Cardiovascular Unit at Benefis right after graduating from Montana State. Her passion for cardiac care only intensified when working as a nurse at Central Montana Heart and Vascular, providing the impetus for her to further her education and become a nurse practitioner.

Megan loves medicine of the heart because she admires the comprehensive effect it has on the rest of the body. If you understand how the heart works, you can then have a greater understanding of the rest of the human body and its many diverse functions.
