HAPPY SUNDAY ✨🐶🐱

We hope that everyone has been enjoying their long weekend! September is Animal Pain Awareness Month! It aims to raise awareness about the importance of recognizing and managing pain in animals.

During this month, veterinary professionals, animal welfare organizations, and pet owners focus on:
* Educating pet owners about the signs of pain in animals
* Promoting the use of appropriate pain management techniques
* Encouraging regular veterinary checkups for early detection of pain
* Raising funds for research into animal pain management
By understanding and addressing animal pain, we can improve their well-being and ensure they live pain-free lives.

Here are our hours for this week:

Monday, September 1st - CLOSED
Tuesday, September 2nd - 9:00AM - 3:30PM (CLOSED for lunch 12:00PM - 1:00PM)
Wednesday, September 3rd - 9:00AM - 3:30PM (CLOSED for lunch 12:00PM - 1:00PM)
Thursday, September 4th - CLOSED
Friday, September 5th - 9:00AM - 3:30PM (CLOSED for lunch 12:00PM - 1:00PM)

We are accepting towel and blanket donations. You may drop those off at any time that the clinic is open. Please do not bring us bed sheets as we have no use for them.

When coming to the clinic, please make sure to bring your pet on a leash or carrier, ALWAYS. There is wild life surrounding the clinic and we want to make ensure everyone’s safety.

Please call (847-688-5740) or email (greatlakesvtf@gmail.com) prior to medication pickup and to schedule appointments. We do NOT honor appointment requests made through Facebook.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we try to schedule you on a first come, first serve basis.

Please note that in terms of running late to your scheduled appointment, we are allowing a 10 minute grace period. If you are more than 10 minutes late, we are going to ask to reschedule you. Unfortunately, it causes all our other appointments to run later than the scheduled time.

HAPPY FRIDAY ✨🐶🐱

National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day is observed annually on August 22nd to remind cat owners to schedule annual wellness checkups and vaccinations for their feline companions. The day highlights the importance of regular veterinary visits because cats are adept at concealing signs of illness, which can lead to conditions going undiagnosed and untreated until they become serious.

Why the Day is Important
* Early Detection:Regular vet visits help catch diseases like arthritis, dental issues, or kidney problems in their early stages when they are more manageable.
* Preventing Crises:Proactive care, rather than waiting for an emergency, can prevent crises and potentially save on long-term costs.
* Challenging Myths:The holiday addresses the common misconception that cats are independent and don't require regular medical attention, countering the fact that many cats miss out on yearly checkups compared to dogs.
How to Participate
* Schedule an Appointment:Use the day as a prompt to book your cat's annual wellness exam with your veterinarian.
* Educate Yourself:Learn more about common feline health issues and how to recognize subtle signs of discomfort.
* Spread Awareness:Encourage other cat guardians to prioritize their cats' health by highlighting the importance of veterinary care.

HAPPY FRIDAY ✨🐶🐱

August is recognized as Itchy Pet Awareness Month! This annual campaign aims to educate pet owners about the common causes of itching in pets and encourages conversations with veterinarians about potential skin conditions and treatment options.

Causes of itching
Pets can experience itching due to various factors, including:
* Allergies: These can be environmental (like pollen and dust mites), food-related, or caused by flea bites.
* Parasites: Fleas, mites, and ticks can all cause skin irritation.
* Infections: Bacterial, fungal, or yeast infections can lead to itchy skin.
* Other conditions: Contact dermatitis (reactions to irritants like detergents or certain plants), dry skin, or even anxiety can also cause itching.

Treatment and prevention
If you notice your pet scratching or exhibiting other signs of discomfort, it's crucial to consult your veterinarian. They can accurately diagnose the cause and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include:
* Medications (antibiotics, antifungal treatments, anti-itch medications)
* Specialized shampoos or topical treatments
* Allergy testing and possibly immunotherapy
* Dietary changes or supplements
* Parasite prevention and treatment
In addition to veterinary care, you can take preventative steps such as:
* Keeping your pet's living area clean and minimizing allergens.
* Bathing and grooming your pet regularly.
* Using a veterinarian-approved parasite preventive year-round.
* Providing a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
Early intervention and proactive measures are key to keeping your pet healthy and comfortable.

HAPPY CATURDAY ✨🐶🐱

July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month in the United States. It's a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of keeping pets safe and preventing them from going missing. Many pets go missing, especially around the Fourth of July due to fireworks and summer vacations.

Key actions for pet owners:
* Microchipping: Ensure your pet is microchipped and that the registration information is up-to-date.
* ID tags: Make sure your pet always wears a collar with a current ID tag that includes your contact information.
* Secure your home: Check fences, gates, and doors to ensure they are secure and prevent escape.
* Supervise outdoor time: Keep pets on a leash when walking or in unfenced areas, and be mindful of open doors and gates.
* Be cautious during travel: If traveling with pets, be extra vigilant in new environments and keep them leashed or in secure carriers.
* Be aware of surroundings: Loud noises like fireworks can frighten pets, causing them to run away.
* Support local shelters: Consider donating to or volunteering at your local animal shelter.
By taking these preventative measures, you can help reduce the number of pets that go missing and ensure they stay safe and sound.

Here are our hours for this week:
