Silicone and saline breast implants both have the same silicone shell. The difference is in the filler inside. Some people feel that the saline is more natural and a better choice. However, the salt water filling does not feel like natural breast tissue and they are slightly more likely to ripple visibly later. The silicone gel feels very much like breast tissue and is usually undetectable to feel. Silicone and saline weigh the same and usually look the same, but they do not feel the same. Silicones are much more popular today as they have been shown to be safe, and usually feel more natural. There is much more to discuss though with your plastic surgeon in making this decision.

To optimize your recovery and your results after breast implant surgery, consider these tips:

1. If your implants were placed under the muscle, they should be riding high initially. Do not wear a bra, unless instructed by your doctor. Your breasts need to drop into position over time to look and feel natural.

2. Managed properly, you should have very little pain after your surgery. Follow your doctors instructions for the first few days and take your pain medicine in decreasing doses. After that, your doctor may recommend Tylenol or after about five days Advil or Aleve. Do not use ice on your skin. As your sensation is decreased during healing, this can be dangerous. Any cold packs that you use should be wrapped in a towel or washcloth to protect your skin and be only chilly , not cold.

3. For the first 5 to 7 days, avoid any strenuous activity at all. Then follow your doctor's instructions in returning to your normal routines. Most people can go back to office work in about five days. Returning to the gym is variable depending on the exact procedure that you had.

4. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: A balanced diet, adequate hydration, and avoiding smoking are crucial for healing, and can impact the healing and ultimate appearance of your implants.

5. Monitor Breast Health: Follow your surgeon’s guidance on breast health checks, such as mammograms or other imaging, and report any changes.

6. Massage Your Breasts: If recommended by your surgeon, breast massage may help healing.
