Anorexia Athletica Symptoms
Warning signs of anorexia athletica can easily go undetected due to the overvaluation of fitness in our society. Individuals that exercise consistently and/or excessively are often seen as being more disciplined and motivated. Individuals in a disordered person’s life might revere their dedication and unknowingly enable continued or increased exercise anorexia behaviors. If you or someone you know is engaging in the following behaviors, it is important to consider the relationship to exercise:

Exercise routinely significantly interfering with daily living activities.
Exercise occurring in inappropriate settings.
Continuing to exercise despite injury or medical illness.
Continuing to exercise despite inclement weather.
Feelings of anxiety, shame, guilt, or distress when not able to exercise.
Using exercise as permission to eat.
Using exercise as compensation for eating.
Feelings of low self-esteem.
Distorted body image.
Hiding exercise.
Feeling that exercise exertion is “never enough.”
Withdrawal or isolation from support system.

Negative thinking is a faulty pattern of thought that can lead to anxiety, depression, and poor self-esteem. It can also affect your relationships, decision-making, and health. Some examples of negative thinking patterns include:
Overgeneralization: When you feel like something always happens to you, or never happens to you
Black and white thinking: When you see things in extremes, like all good or all bad
Emotional reasoning: When you assume your emotions reflect the reality of a situation
Catastrophizing: When you jump to the worst possible conclusion in every situation
Jumping to conclusions: When you make conclusions based on little to no evidence
Personalization: When you make things about you when they are not
Disqualifying the positive: When you convince yourself that positive things don’t count

When setting New Year’s resolutions to improve mental health, you can consider:
Making goals SMART: SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timed.
Prioritizing and breaking down goals: Prioritize goals based on importance, need, and timeline. Then, break each goal into smaller, more manageable tasks.
Being flexible: Allow for tweaks and adjustments as needed.
Incorporating self-compassion: Consider self-love and kindness in your goals.
Maintaining healthy routines: Preserve healthy routines and relationships with loved ones.
Practicing mindfulness: Pay attention to the present moment, including your thoughts, feelings, body, and the world around you.
Practicing self-care: Get regular exercise, eat healthy meals, stay hydrated, make sleep a priority, try a relaxing activity, practice gratitude, and focus on positivity.
