Why get sealants?
The most important reason for getting sealants is to avoid tooth decay. Fluoride in toothpaste and drinking water protects the smooth surfaces of teeth, but back teeth need extra protection. Sealants cover the chewing surfaces of the back teeth and keep out germs and food. Applying sealants to teeth before they decay will also save time and money in the long run by avoiding fillings, crowns, or caps used to fix decayed teeth.

The Importance of Choosing Healthy Snacks and Meals While Working
As the hustle and bustle of the working day kicks in, you may forget all about that sweet breakfast cereal or mid-morning Danish, but sugar is “zooming” right into place regardless. Even if you’re absorbed with work projects and meetings, the sweets you eat can still cause tooth decay and lead to cavities.
Do your teeth a favor and replace sugary sweets with healthier options, such as nuts, fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese, and yogurt. If you want to reward yourself with something sweet (we know you’re doing a great job at work!), try dark chocolate. It has less sugar than other snacks and doesn’t stick to the teeth like other sugary candies.

Did you know that an abscessed tooth is bad for your overall health?
The infection from the abscessed tooth can spread to surrounding tissues in your head and neck, potentially reaching your bloodstream and causing serious complications like sepsis, a life-threatening systemic infection, if left untreated; it can also spread to your jawbone, sinuses, and in some cases, even your heart or brain.
If you have an abscess or think you may have one, let the team at Bellevue Family Dentistry help you.

Tips for staying calm when you visit the dentist
If you’re nervous about an upcoming dental visit, try these tips to curb your anxiety:

Share your fears. If you’re feeling tense or anxious, please let your dentist and the dental staff know. Expressing your concerns will help your dentist adapt the treatment to your needs.
Focus on your breathing during dental procedures. When people are nervous, they tend to hold their breath, which decreases oxygen levels and further increases feelings of panic. As in some meditation techniques, a focus on slow, regular breathing helps reduce stress levels.
Listen to some tunes! If the sound of the drill bothers you, bring along your favorite music and earphones.
Watch what you eat and drink. Avoid caffeine before a dental appointment. Eat high-protein foods, which — unlike sugary foods — produce a calming effect.
Use hand signals. Empower yourself by agreeing on hand signals to use when communicating with your dentist. When you feel uncomfortable, signal the dentist to ease off or stop the procedure.
Choose a low-stress appointment time. Select a time for your dental visit when you’re less likely to be rushed or under pressure. This may mean an early morning appointment.

May is National Smile Month
You feel better when you smile.
Smiling increases mood-enhancing hormones while decreasing stress-enhancing hormones, including cortisol, and adrenaline. It also reduces overall blood pressure. And because you typically smile when you’re happy, the muscles used trigger your brain to produce more endorphins—the chemical that relieves pain and stress.

In the United States, individuals consume approximately 50 gallons of sugary beverages per year. A steady diet of sugary foods and drinks can destroy tooth enamel. In addition, constantly grazing on sweet, sugary snacks and frequently sipping sugary drinks can negatively affect your overall and oral health.
When sugar is consumed repeatedly, often in hidden amounts, the harmful effect on teeth can be dramatic. Sugar on teeth provides food for bacteria, which produce acid. The acid can eat away the enamel on teeth.

What dental issues do you have that are hidden or too small to see? Dental X-rays can tell you.
X-rays can show the condition of your teeth, their roots, your jaw placement, and the overall composition of your facial bones. X-rays can also help your dentist determine the presence and degree of gum disease, cavities, abscesses, and abnormal growths, such as cysts and tumors. X-rays can also show the exact location of impacted teeth and teeth that have not yet fully developed.
