July is Dry Eye Awareness Month!

Dry eye is a very common disease and you may have experienced some symptoms throughout your life.

Both men and women can get dry eye. However, it is more common in women and over the age of 50. Some factors of dry eye may include: your lifestyle choices, electronic devices, allergies, autoimmune diseases, environment (dry, humid, or windy), previous surgical procedures, and even certain medications can play a factor.

As people have more birthdays, you tend to make fewer tears. With fewer tears, it causes your eyes to become more irritable, inflamed, itchy, and can cause pain. It may even cause blurry vision.

There are ways to help your eyes! Make sure you stay hydrated throughout the day, doing the 20-20-20 rule, wear eye protection, make sure to not wear your contacts all day every day, and talk to your eye care provider about other treatment options. Ask your provider about treatments such as punctual plugs, artificial tear eye drops, prescription medications, and in house procedures that can help manage and treat Dry Eye Disease.

Having difficulty with or experiencing symptoms of Dry Eye Disease? Schedule an appointment with Dr. Ann today! Dr. Ann runs the Dry Eye Institute at Advanced Eyecare Center and has access to special technology to help you with your dry eyes.

⭐️ This month we are running a special for NEW LLLT patients! Patients who schedule a full treatment plan this month get one session for FREE!

Fourth of July is coming up soon and the fun of firework shows will be here! Whether you are simply watching the firework show or lighting the fireworks, eye safety is vital.

Thousands of people each year experience eye injuries from fireworks, many just being bystanders. The heat, force, and chemicals that are in fireworks can cause serious eye injuries such as abrasions, burns, ruptured eyeballs, and detached retinas. If you’re planning to enjoy fireworks this Independence Day, it’s time to look into some eye safety tips.

Best ways to protect your eyes:

🎇 Leave the fireworks to the professionals. These are trained individuals that know the safety guidelines and follow strict protocol.

🎇 Wear protective eye wear. This applies to everyone, not just the professional.

🎇 Stay a safe distance away. Malfunctions happen, better to keep your distance in case of an emergency.

🎇 Store Fireworks safely. Improper storage can result in accidental fires or explosions

🎇 Act quickly in case of an emergency. Do NOT self treat an eye injuries! It is important to avoid rubbing your eyes, rinsing your eyes, and never apply pressure. Seek medical attention right away!

This Independence Day let’s enjoy our firework shows safely and take proper safety guidelines to preserve and protect our vision.
