This scam is still going around the area! If you get a call like this, tell them you're going to call them back in a moment, and instead call the police office number you can find on Google. Don't call them back on the number they gave you.
The 21st Judicial Circuit Court in St. Louis County wants to warn citizens about reports of a scam threatening arrest if you fail to pay a fine for missing jury duty.
How it works:
- You get a call at home, at work or on your cell phone that you missed jury duty and
- You need to pay a fine right away (usually with a pre-paid debit card)
- If you refuse to pay the fine, they threaten to have you arrested
Scammers can be convincing by repeating personal identifying information that makes it seem like they are legitimate. Please be aware that the Courts, law enforcement and other government agencies do not make phone calls about missing jury service and warrants and will never ask for payment or financial information over the phone.
If you should receive such a phone call, please contact your local law enforcement.
A legitimate jury summons from St. Louis County Courts would come in the mail.
If you are unsure if a jury summons is valid, you can call the Jury office at 314-615-2669
