𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑨𝒕𝒉𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒆𝒆𝒌: Jayson Ross--one of DeMatha Catholic High School's amazing swimmers. Jayson is an All American athlete in both freestyle and butterfly swimming. According to his coach, Jayson clocked the second-fastest time by a freshman in the Metro Championship for "Boys 50 Freestyle" in the last 25 years. The only other freshman who was faster went on to win an Olympic gold medal. That means Jayson has a VERY bright future ahead.

We are closed today in honor of Juneteenth.
𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙅𝙪𝙣𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙝?

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863. In it, the document declared that all enslaved people shall be set free. Unfortunately, the message didn’t reach places where there wasn’t a strong military presence to enforce it (like Kentucky, Delaware, and Texas).

It wasn’t until June 19, 1865 when troops reached Galveston, TX that an additional 250,000 enslaved people were freed. Because enslaved people were not allowed to read or write, it marked the first anniversary of the day that they first learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, more than two years after it was initially issued.
