Cervicalgia, a clinical term for neck pain, is discomfort around the spine beneath the head. Cervicalgia can be caused by a variety of different issues, including muscle strains, poor posture, osteoarthritis, and stress. Common complaints include neck stiffness and soreness, decreased neck range of motion, and headaches. It is also possible to experience radiating symptoms down to the shoulders, upper back, arms, and fingers. Physical therapists specialize in diagnosing and treating cervicalgia, as well as ruling out conditions that may present similarly. A physical therapist may instruct in neck stretching and strengthening, as well as evaluate posture. Recommendations for workplace ergonomics and stress management may also be appropriate steps to take.
