The Honor Scholar Program seeks to enhance the quality of the DePauw community's experience by foste

The program incorporates the quintessential values of the liberal arts education: a community of scholars who come together to read important and challenging classic and contemporary works which range broadly in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences; who are interested in sharing their thinking with colleagues in a small seminar setting in interdisciplinary contexts; and who engage in intensive writing which culminates in the preparation and defense of a senior thesis in their fields of specialization.

Alden writes: “Here is my quick elevator pitch: My thesis explores the intersection of the personal, professional, and political through the life and legacy of my great-grandfather, Sherwood Fiske Brown (1902-1968). A first-generation college student who became a beloved professor of Physics, Brown emerges as a fascinating lens through whom to explore the shift in American higher education during the Cold War era. Through his time at Colby College, MIT, and Lowell Technological Institute, I examine how the role of professors, and the relationship between academia, research, and federal funding, have changed from his generation to mine.” 🦉📚

Izzy writes: “My thesis uses AppleTV’s show Severance in order to explore the economic phenomenon of “bullsh*t jobs,” as defined by David Graeber. While TV show’s such as The Office allowed us to laugh about the workplace and our jobs, Severance exists in a newer genre with a different tone. These differences, in some ways, benefit the critique, but they also come with their own implications in how we think about the work we do, workplace incentives, and the office environment.” 📚🦉

Jim writes: “I am currently comparing the Italian and American healthcare systems through the lens of total knee replacement surgeries to reveal how each system’s structure reflects its cultural values. Through analyzing differences in access, cost, outcomes, and patient satisfaction, I identify strengths and potential improvements for both models in order to propose positive legislative changes for both.” 🦉📚

These platforms are designed to capture attention and activate the brain’s reward systems, which can lead to stress, anxiety, and constant self-comparison.” 🦉📚

Ava writes: “My thesis project examines how the United States has failed to properly enforce the Animal Welfare Act, leading many dogs in puppy mills to live in inhumane conditions. I analyze sources like the Horrible Hundred reports, USDA fiscal year summaries, and inspection records to identify repeated violations and patterns of neglect within licensed breeding facilities across the country. I also compare states like Missouri and Nebraska to show how differences in enforcement and state laws impact animal welfare. Overall, my project argues that stronger and more consistent federal regulations are needed in order to protect dogs in these breeding facilities.”

Through my research I hope to develop a better understanding of my family history and the impact the church has on individual and group experience.” 📚🦉

Ryan writes: “My research explores how the Southern regions in the U.S., especially urban and low-income communities, experience climate gentrification and environmental justice at disproportionately high rates. I analyze the impact and risks of climate disasters and how policies that are meant to improve resilience and promote equal disaster relief can contribute to the systemic marginalization of vulnerable residents, which is rooted in redlining. By linking case studies and literature, I will propose more equitable approaches to the increase in natural disasters.” 📚🦉

Ben writes: “While we know microplastics have made themselves known in almost all areas of the body including the brain, we know little to none about their impacts on human health. Considering the disproportionate exposure chemicals that leach from microplastics have on society, including bisphenols, PFAS, and phthalates, I am attempting to provide insight into the actual impacts of the microplastics themselves. I am planning on doing so in the lab by using the gut microbiome model, using E. coli as a proxy for human health by exposing the bacteria to polystyrene microplastics and observing trends in biofilm formation and subsequent antibiotic resistance.” 📚🦉
