COVID-19 has been increasing in the North East and we are seeing local elevations. This can be due to gatherings and people staying cool indoors with the rising temperatures.

Please be mindful and test if you feel sick or “under the weather”. Most importantly, please be aware and sympathetic of others who might not have a robust immune system as yourself.

08/22/2023

Mosquitos have been out and about. The numbers of West Nile Virus and EEE are causing a short term increase (throughout Massachusetts NOT Franklin County) due to the heat and humidity. With the cooler temperatures coming this should decrease.
For now, don’t forget to get rid of stagnant water. Empty pots, tires or other catch basins around your property to decrease the spread.

"For those who want to make a donation to the emergency shelter families who have arrived at the Days Inn, please bring ALL donations to the Health Department at 20 Sanderson Street. The hotel asks that you DO NOT distribute items in the parking lot or drop off at their location due to space limitations.

The City of Greenfield is working with Days Inn and social service agencies to make the transitions for our new neighbors as smooth as possible. Having multiple people at the hotel or distributing items outdoors can be challenging, so we are focused on assembling an organized operation that best aids the families.

We appreciate your generosity and we are grateful for the numerous community inquiries we have received so far. At this time, we ask for all parties to cooperate during this transition.

Thank You."

Just a reminder to everyone that we are still seeing some unhealthy air quality through today. So please be cautious if you fall into any of the below categories.

101-150 = Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
Unhealthy for sensitive groups including people with heart or lung disease such as asthma, older adults, children, teenagers, and people who are active outdoors. People with lung disease are at greater risk from exposure to ozone, while people with either lung disease or heart disease are at greater risk from exposure to particle pollution.

People in sensitive groups should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion; take more breaks and do less intense activities, and follow asthma action plans and keep quick relief medicine handy. Watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath.

The swimming area at the Green River Swimming and Recreation Area remains closed until further notice due to the presence of cryptosporidium and giardia in the water.

Results from the latest round of testing confirm the continued presence of the parasites, after they were found last week.

The recreation area remains open for non-swimming activities.

Out of an abundance of caution, the City has also tested its drinking water system for cryptosporidium and giardia. These tests have come back negative.

07/28/2022

The Lab has confirmed multiple parasites in the Green River Swimming area.

⚠️Cryptosporidiosis- It is caused by a parasite found in stool
(an infection that can cause severe diarrhea. You can get this infection after eating food or drinking water that is contaminated. This includes swallowing water while swimming).
⚠️ Giardiasis- cause by a parasite called Giardia. It is passed on through oral contact with infected f***s. You can get the parasite by eating food or drinking water that contains infected f***s.

Symptoms of both parasites-
Explosive, watery, foul smelling stool
Greasy stool that floats
Bloating
Nausea
Loss of appetite
Belly Pain
Fatigue

The time between infection and the start of the symptoms is 1-2 weeks.

If you swam in this body of water and are experiencing any of these symptoms please contact your healthcare provider for diagnosis.

MOSQUITO UPDATE:

This week there were a total of 3 positive samples found in Barnstable, Bristol and Essex counties for West Nile Virus and EEE.

Regional drought and continued warm weather may decrease the population of EEE vectors while supporting the West Nile Virus vectors.

Due to these conditions, it is recommended that people continue to use EPA approved repellents, wear appropriate clothing and avoid peak mosquito activity between dusk and dawn. Remove standing water by emptying containers and tarps.

Greenfield COVID-19 waste water results have significantly decreased this week!

The Health Dept. Will you keep updated with changes.

We are sorry for the inconvenience!

Unfortunately we were just notified by the Board of Health that we need to close the water out of an abundance of caution due to a possible cyclosporiasis bacteria. Please note, it has not been confirmed that the bacteria is present in the water, but there has been a confirmed case in the area. Further testing is being conducted and we will keep everyone updated with any changes. The rest of the park remains open for your enjoyment.
