Providing structure and support while allowing you to move freely and bend, the spine is one of the most important parts of your body. Here are some fun facts about your amazing spine:

The average spine has 33 vertebrae, 100 joints, 220 ligaments, and 120 muscles.

There are 3 major sections of the spine: the cervical, the thoracic and the lumbar.

There are 13.5 million nerve cells in the spinal cord.

Over 25% of your spine's length is from cartilage.

Back pain is one of the most common medical problems with around 8 out of 10 people experiencing back pain at some point in their lives.

In America, the most common cause of this back pain is car accidents.

Back pain is the second most common reason to visit a doctor. The first is the common cold.

The spine is truly our body's foundation. This is why we must do our part to ensure our spines are functioning optimally. Make seeing a chiropractor regularly part of your routine to see a substantial improvement in your spine health and overall well being.

What is TMJ syndrome?

TMJ syndrome refers to pain and restricted movement of the jaw joint and the muscles that surround it. The temporomandibular joint, also called the TMJ, connects the jawbone to the skull and acts as a sliding-hinge. The dysfunction of this joint leads to pain when opening or closing your mouth and can restrict it's movement. For some, this TMJ pain is self-manageable, however with an estimated 10 million Americans suffering from TMJ disorders, some take measure towards relief and prevention from future pain. Fortunately, here at Longo Chiropractic and Deep Tissue Laser Center, we have options and various treatment plans to help relieve and even cure this condition.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of dysfunction of the TMJ include: tenderness and/or pain in one or both sides of the jaw, ear pain and/or pain around ears, pain in discomfort in facial regions, restricted jaw movement, locking of the jaw and pain while chewing or speaking.

What are the possible causes?

The cause of an individual's TMJ disorder is difficult to determine and can vary from person to person. What is known, is that genetics, arthritis, the tendency to clench or grind teeth, and trauma to the jaw or head may be factors that contribute to the development of TMJ syndrome. Anything that causes excessive strain on the jaw and muscles surrounding the jaw can increase your risk of developing TMJ disorders.

How we can help you:

If you are suffering from dysfunction of the TMJ, we can help you find relief. Chiropractic adjustments to the jaw can relieve the pressure on this joint significantly. A jaw adjustment may sound intimating, but this is an extremely gentle manipulation and will be done by a chiropractor who is highly trained and has a great deal of experience treating TMJ dysfunction. In addition to chiropractic adjustments, deep tissue laser therapy offered at our clinic has been show to be very effective in treating TMJ syndrome. This specialized medical laser can encourage the tissue surrounding this joint to repair and heal. If you or someone you know is struggling with pain due to a TMJ disorder, let us help you heal in a noninvasive, drug-free way.

Of the numerous health benefits of seeing a chiropractor, people tend to be the most surprised by it's role in helping to improve indigestion and other gastrointestinal issues.

Chiropractic adjustments help ensure that the systems of the body are functioning in harmony. The spine protects the spinal cord which is responsible for carrying nerve signals both to and from the brain. This is how your body communicates. When the spine is out of alignment, it can negatively impact the communication system of your body. The nerve responsible for sending signals to your digestive organs is housed in the neck region of the spine. Further, very important nerves located in the lower back help determine the rate of digestion. If the spine is out of alignment, it may irritate these essential nerves, stopping their communication to the brain and preventing digestion from being carried out as it should. Chiropractic care has been shown to improve chronic constipation, bloating and abdominal pain among other digestive issues.

Many people look to medications such as antacids to help the inconvenient symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders. While these medications do quickly help ease your symptoms, they do not aid in fixing the cause of your irregular digestion or help to prevent future digestive issues. Chiropractic care on the other hand, addresses the root cause of the problem in a natural way and can help to prevent problems in the future. A chiropractor can also provide nutrition advice to help you make sure that the digestive system stays in tact after the adjustments are made. Ensuring that you have appropriate amounts of fiber and water in your diet will be essential in the upkeep of a healthy digestive system.

As you can see, a chiropractor is concerned with so much more than simply reducing your back pain. When the spine is misaligned, it can be near impossible for the digestive organs to function optimally. Because of this, when paired with a balanced diet and regular exercise, chiropractic care is an excellent choice to both help treat and prevent future gastrointestinal issues.

An appointment with a new doctor can be intimidating and it helps to know what to expect at your first appointment. People seek chiropractic care for many reasons and your chiropractor will want to know about your history, condition, and what goals you have as a patient. This is why your initial appointment with a chiropractor will include a thorough chiropractic exam.

To get to know you and develop a specific treatment plan, your chiropractor may inquire about your family and medical history. This will give the chiropractor insight into how to proceed in your treatment. This initial conversation will likely consist of questions about your symptoms and pain in order to properly diagnose and treat the condition. Your chiropractor may want some insight into your work life and activity level in your day-to-day activities as that will help them assess what could be causing your aches and pains and how they can make those activities more comfortable for you.

During this first appointment, your chiropractor will want to do some simple testing to understand your level of mobility. This physical portion of the chiropractic exam may consist of testing your reflexes, range of motion, posture, and others depending on your condition.

Your chiropractor may also want to take x-rays depending on your situation and past medical history. For example, if an auto accident caused your pains, your chiropractor may want x-rays to determine what damage was done.

Finally, during that first appointment, you can expect to receive a chiropractic adjustment. Using all of the information about your musculoskeletal condition collected during the consultation, your chiropractor will provide a manipulation to properly align the body and relieve pain. They will then provide any advice that can make you more comfortable in between treatments, and will reveal how often they suggest you receive treatments. The end goal is that you leave the office in better condition than when you arrived.

Seeing a chiropractor regularly will help keep individuals functioning at their best, but many people wonder how often they should see their chiropractor to maximize the benefits of treatment.

How often you should see a chiropractor depends on your condition and what you are looking to achieve as a patient. During the first visit to a chiropractor, patients receive a chiropractic exam so the chiropractor can develop a treatment plan specific to the patient's unique condition and needs. This exam consists of a discussion of medical history, posture and reflex analysis, range of motion analysis, questions about the condition, and x-rays if needed. Additionally, people seek chiropractic care for many reasons including, relief from a chronic condition, relief from a new strain, or health maintenance and future pain prevention. All of these factors determine how often your chiropractor will recommend coming in to receive manipulations.

After your first appointment, it is not uncommon for a chiropractor to recommend coming in a couple of times per week as your body is adjusting to a new treatment plan. People who have been experiencing chronic pain for a while and are now seeking health maintenance, often see their chiropractors 1-2 times per month. It is important to remember that it is often a wiser choice to make appointments for maintenance rather than scheduling as the pain gets bad. This puts a focus on the prevention of a condition rather than the treatment of a condition. Ultimately, how often you see your chiropractor is very unique to your personal needs and condition. The only way to truly find out how often you should receive adjustments, is to have a discussion with your chiropractor about your condition and goals.

Also known as medial tibial stress syndrome, shin splints cause pain below the knee towards the front of the leg. This condition can cause extreme pain and discomfort for athletes, runners, and anyone performing at a high level of activity.

Shin splints occur when the muscles, tendons and connective tissues of the lower leg become overworked. Sometimes, the pain goes away once you are done with your activity and can be treated with rest and ice. Other times, the pain can become continuous and can prevent people from partaking in their activities.

Chiropractic care is a great option for treating shin splints. It is an ideal treatment since there are no side effects unlike pharmaceutical options. A chiropractor will ensure the whole body is properly aligned since proper spine and pelvis alignment will take pressure off of the bones in the lower leg. Additionally, a chiropractor can make adjustments to the knee and ankles to
relieve pain from shin splints. Seeing a chiropractor will allow you to treat the root cause of the problem rather than just simply trying to cover up the painful symptom of shin splints.

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and are characterized by a steady ache in both sides of the the head and/or neck. People describe tension headaches as feeling like a tight band is around the head. Although the pain is usually mild to moderate, these headaches can make it more difficult to have a positive and productive day. Fortunately, chiropractic care has been shown to be very effective for treating tension headaches.

Tension headaches occur when the muscles in the head and neck region become tense. This is triggered by a variety of stressors such as stress or anxiety, depression, or injury to the head. Seeing a chiropractor regularly will improve your spinal alignment which will reduce and prevent the tension causing that pain. A properly aligned spine will also allow your blood to circulate more freely which can in turn reduce the inflammation that leads to these headaches. Additionally, regular chiropractic care can decrease the intensity and frequency of migraines.

If you experience frequent headaches, chiropractic care may provide the relief you are looking for. These adjustments allow you to treat the actual cause of the headache rather than simply getting treatment for the symptom of pain.

Too many of us have experienced a time when we attempted to lift something, and were met with extreme back pain and instant regret. We can spare ourselves this pain by practicing the following safe lifting techniques:

Plan to lift. Make sure you have a clear path ahead and have a good idea of where you are moving the object so that you are not holding the object for an unreasonably long amount of time.

Make sure you have a clear view of where you are going. Whether this means not stacking boxes too high or carrying objects horizontally, make sure the object isn't obstructing your view.

Keep your feet about a shoulder width apart. Placing your feet too wide apart can make lifting the object more difficult and having them too close together can make you unsteady.

Face forwards. Avoid bending your neck while lifting as you can strain this muscle in the process.

Get a good grip on the object and hold it close to your body. Lifting away from your body can strain back and shoulder muscles, while gripping close to your body will be noticeably more stable

Keep your back straight while bending. Avoid a "hunch-back" position while lifting as this posture puts a lot of pressure on the spine. The wrong movement or too much weight on the area can put you at risk of a herniated disc.

Bend your knees while lifting. Many people have a tendency to bend at the waist when picking something up and this puts pressure and the weight of the object on the spine. Additionally, keeping the knees slightly bent throughout the lifting process can provide better balance.

Lift with your leg muscles. Many have been giving the advice to lift with your legs and bending the knees and keeping a straight back will allow the leg muscles to do the lifting. The leg muscles are stronger than the back muscles and learning to use this to your advantage will be beneficial to your spine health.

Remembering these methods can spare you the grief and pain of a long term back injury. It is important to note that if the spine is not properly aligned, lifting will be a pain no matter how well you follow the proper techniques. Receiving regular chiropractic care can ensure proper spine alignment and can make lifting, and daily life in general, more comfortable. Remember, it is much easier to prevent an injury rather than having to get treatment when it is too late.
