It is a beautiful thing when patients celebrate with you. These gorgeous flowers were brought in today by two patients today who love our work and what we stand for - a mission for prevention and a passion for caring. The flowere were to celebrate my graduating as a Doctor of Nursing Practice (from UMass).

Speaking about the importance of the foot / calf pump in health. It’s the second heart and is 40% of your cardiac blood flow. It’s not just about walking it’s about releasing tension so that blood/lymph can flow.

This is from S- who is the manager aif an aging service acess point - His plea is a reflection of all the ASAPs.
The ASAPs are amazing organizations in Massachusetts who oversee the care of older and vulnerable adukts in MA. They maje sure the care agencies are in compilance, they work with insurance to get peole the care they need, they are the meals in wheels people and they are also the people wjk help personal care attendants be compensated. MA has more people over 65 than under 65. And care givers need to be compensateded too. Without this bill what would elder care in MA look like? I can personally live with a pot hole or two knowing that thousandds of elders are receiving a little bit of care.

The money he talks about would be reallocated from the infrastructure bill so anyone whose livelihood is bridge/ road construction will be impacted ( including the police who do road duty).
This is a tough choice. Elder well being verses those who have families to support.
in my opinion (and I may be wrong) those who have families to support and who are healthy have more choices and options for work than those elders we take care of.
Agreed, these choices suck

And we all know that someone has to stay home to take care of grandma and it’s not going to be the bridge building guy - (he needs to find work). It’s going to be the wife or daughter or teenage son or his time
after overtime. It’s not fair, but it is where we are.

To be honest, it’s going to be a burden on the whole family. I therfore urge you to support the bill so that the PCAs and caregivers can be compensated and make meaningful contribution to family economics while also taking care of a loved one. Please encourage your patients to speak up as well.

From S-
As you may be aware, the ASAP network has been heavily impacted by a substantial budget deficit – the governor has requested a 60 million dollar supplemental budget to remedy this. Our access to this funding directly impacts our ability to support our aging adults in the community, inlcuding the amount of hours we’re able to authorize for your caregivers to provide and the number of consumers we can roster.

We thank you in advance for your collaboration here.

Dear Readers,
The birds are chirping, the sugar houses are now open in MA, and warmer temperatures will be melting the ice, but overnight temperatures will also create patches of dangerous black ice. So I wanted to put out there that walking will be dangerous for a little while longer.

I’ve been hearing sad tales of broken hips, concussions, bruises and frustrations. Agreed, It’s hard to be trapped indoors, and there are some things you can do.

As a foot care nurse, I often offer advice about balance, shoe fit, foot flexibility and the best way to walk, and on ice modifications need to be made. The normal heel-toe foot swing arms action doesn’t work well on ice. Instead take small deliberate steps, don’t transfer weight until the footing is secure, take small steps on flat feet. Don’t crunch your toes, (that just makes you more off balance), instead relax your feet, allow them to spread and connect. And walking poles should be your best friends.
I know it sounds silly but, think of the way a penguin walks, imitate that and you will have more stability. Looking down while walking is not a good idea in general, because your head is heavy your butt will follow your head. Look up, look ahead, feel your feet, go slow and steady and be watchful for patches of ice. Balance takes no effort, if you feel strain try moving your hips forward. Rolling your shoulders, not whirling your arms will help loosen you up. Breathe deep, smile and enjoy and still move.

Some people have access to a gym or indoor walking track, and although fresh air and sunshine have great benefits, if you want to pound the pavement walking indoors until the streets are safer maybe a better choice. You can walk at the mall if there are no other options.

While sitting, you can release tension by bending your knees and letting your hip rotate out and then stretching your toes wide, curling them tight, and rotating your foot. The body likes to flow and move. Sitting stiffens us all up.

Don’t forget to stay hydrated and nourish your soul and your skin. A shoulder roll, a little just releasing the tension out of your body, a laugh with a friend and a little loving care of your feet is good for the soul.

Be patient. Take good care of yourself. The days are getting longer, and spring will be here soon. If you stay safe now, you will be enjoying the season and not recovering from a fall.

Our Story

Do you have corns, calluses, painful feet, long toenails or fungal nails? Would you like to not have a bunion or a hammer toe? Please don’t let someone tell you that calluses or pain in your feet or toes is just normal; it is not. At FootCare by Nurses we not only do nail and skin care, we also take the time to help you understand how you, your feet, your skin and your shoes and socks can work better, so that you can be better balanced, avoid pain, corns and calluses, or worse yet, hammer toes, bunions or wounds. Our goal is to have you feel very comfortable and safe in your shoes and have very very happy feet.

Our story - Tired of seeing substandard and overlooked foot care, I started this business in 2016 to get people the quality foot care that I thought people deserved. I set out with the Mission of FootCare by Nurses being prevention and our passion is being caring. Out of the gate I decided to take a very holistic and natural, inexpensive no nonsense approach to providing foot care. Using evidence based practice, some tried and true non-pharmacological treatments and some pretty advanced power tools I created this company to bring feet back into the realm of normal, happy and healthy. I also am a huge believer in sharing nursing knowledge so that you understand what is going on for you.

I outgrew the sum of myself and now have a team of 6 fantastic certified Foot Care Nurses out in the field. I taught them to drink my Koolaid and they love what they do. During the week they can be found at our clinic in Greenfield, and at many area senior centers and councils on aging. They also do a lot of home visits.

Diabetic, chronic illness and elder appropriate, but also suitable for anyone who wants to obtain knowledge about having healthy feet, all of our nurses are nationally board certified through the American Association of Foot Care Nurses (AAFCN) in lower limb and foot care. They have also received additional trainings in a multitude of therapeutic touch techniques, so that they are able to provide an appropriate, great circulation enhancing massage. While we don’t do nail polish our nurses are experts in lower limb assessments, nail care, skin care, wound prevention and shoe and sock fitting. They also can help you not have those ingrown nails.
