January 15, 2009. US Airways Flight 1549 took off from New York City's LaGuardia Airport and almost immediately hit a flock of Canada geese.

In seconds, the Airbus A320 214 (N106US) was a quiet glider over one of the most crowded pieces of airspace in America, with almost no time and nowhere ideal to go
Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger (Purdue University Graduate) flew the airplane and made the call to ditch in the Hudson River, while First Officer Jeff Skiles worked the checklists and restart attempts as the clock ran out. In the cabin, flight attendants Donna Dent, Doreen Welsh, and Sheila Dail did what great crews do: they took control, commanded the evacuation, and got 150 passengers out fast through the available exits and onto the wings and slides as the jet began taking on water. All 155 people onboard survived, and five were reported injured.

After the Hudson, Sully returned to flying for a time, then retired from US Airways on March 3, 2010, closing out a 30 year airline career. He's since focused on aviation safety, leadership, and crisis decision making as a speaker and author, while the entire Flight 1549 crew has been widely recognized for turning an impossible situation into a survivable one.

Thank you to all our service members, each of them critical to the recent operation in Venezuela. Let us never forget in the noise surrounding this operation that the best of what makes this country great stand in the gap, ready to serve. We should know. Many choose to continue their service here with us. Thank you is never enough but it comes from the heart. God bless you, your families and may God bless the United States of America. 🇺🇸
