“The ability to see the whole person is one of the most important parts of nursing,” says Carrie Grattan, BSN, RN, Vice President of Nursing Operations at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Carrie began her nursing career in 2011 specializing in oncology care, working with patients in both outpatient and hospital settings before moving into leadership roles supporting clinical teams and staff. In 2022, she joined SBELIH to be closer to home and family.

After years in leadership, Carrie made the decision to return to bedside nursing on the hospital’s detox and rehabilitation unit. The experience broadened her perspective and reinforced the importance of compassion and understanding the full scope of a patient’s needs.

Her leadership abilities quickly became clear. Within two years, Carrie advanced to Nurse Manager overseeing both the Medical-Surgical and Intensive Care units and recently stepped into her current role as Vice President of Nursing Operations.

Carrie has also played an important role in SBELIH’s successful effort to achieve Primary Stroke Center designation, expanding access to lifesaving stroke care for residents across the North Fork and Shelter Island.

Living just minutes from the hospital, Carrie feels deeply connected to the community she serves. “Caring for people who are your neighbors and members of your community adds a meaningful dimension to the work we do,” she says.

🏥✨ Celebrating 120 Years of Care — and Women’s History Month ✨🏥

As we honor Women’s History Month, we’re proud to reflect on the remarkable origins of Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH). Founded in 1905 as Suffolk County’s first voluntary hospital, SBELIH began in a Victorian mansion generously donated by the Wood Sisters, whose vision and philanthropy laid the foundation for healthcare on the North Fork.

Now celebrating 120 years of continuous service to the residents of the North Fork and Shelter Island, SBELIH’s history is rooted in the leadership, generosity, and resilience of women who helped shape our community.

For more than a century, we have remained committed to providing compassionate, high-quality care close to home. ❤️

❤️ Our March Grateful Patient said it best! ❤️

“Just want to take this moment to express my deep appreciation for the wonderful care I received at SBELIH. Having arrived through emergency, the entire staff did everything possible to make an anxious situation as relaxing and painless as possible. My medical team was professional, skilled, and most sympathetic. The care during my stay was extraordinary; inclusive of nurses, aides, and all support personnel. It felt as though I was in a ‘boutique’ hospital with my first rate surgeon, Dr Luke Swaszek, visiting several times per day. Point being, never question the competency of a small institution!” -- Sherry Shaw

“The role of a doctor is the intersection between devoting yourself to a deep knowledge of the body and mind and developing a true understanding of the human condition,” says Joseph Lomuti, DO. “That combination struck a chord in me. It aligned with my interests and where I wanted to create meaning in my life.”

For Dr. Lomuti, psychiatry is a natural extension of that calling. “Psychiatry expands on that idea. I focus on the inner workings of the brain and neurobiology, but I also believe we are both physical and non-physical beings. Psychiatry allows me to honor both equally.”

Originally from Bergen County, New Jersey, Dr. Lomuti attended medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Maine before coming to Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University for residency training. His first exposure to psychiatry at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital left a lasting impression. “I felt a real passion for psychiatry here. People talk about it openly and thoughtfully. The supervisors and residents felt like my people. I was surrounded by peers who shared similar values.”

The residency program offers a unique structure, rotating between SBELIH as a community hospital and Stony Brook University Hospital. “It’s a singular situation,” he explains. “You get the close-knit, community-based experience at SBELIH and the broader exposures and resources of a large academic medical center.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Lomuti envisions a hybrid career that includes both hospital-based care and private practice. He is also interested in neuromodulation and advancing innovative treatments in psychiatry.

“SBELIH feels like a community. There’s an opportunity to feel like family here,” he says. “We get to know each other well, and we’re all here to help others. In psychiatry, people are drawn to the interpersonal side of medicine. We ask what it means to be a person and what it means to be healthy. That’s what inspires me.”

“I’m a nurse first. I like to be patient-facing,” says Annalisa Monahan, DNP, MHA, MSN, RN-BC, NE-BC, Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services. “When I roll up my sleeves to help care for patients, it sends a message. It all starts with people.”

Dr. Monahan, a nationally board-certified Nurse Executive and a Doctor of Nursing Practice, is a nurse first and foremost. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Phoenix and her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Aspen University. She began her nursing career in 1991, first practicing as a Licensed Practical Nurse before becoming a Registered Nurse. Most recently, Dr. Monahan worked in Manhattan as Director of Patient Care Services for Medicine and Surgery at Mount Sinai West. There, she oversaw eight clinical units, dialysis services, and comprehensive quality oversight, and served as a key leader during Joint Commission surveys. Her background also includes experience in stroke care, addiction medicine, and psychiatry, aligning closely with SBELIH’s clinical strengths.

“It was time to move from a director role to a Chief Nursing Officer position,” she explains. “I saw the potential here to grow with acute services and build something meaningful.”

Since starting in February 2026, Dr. Monahan has prioritized rounding on units and meeting staff across departments. She maintains an open-door policy and believes listening is a leader’s greatest asset. “Leaders need to be accessible. You have to know your people, and they need to see you.”

Her goals for SBELIH are clear: deliver the highest quality patient care, support professional nursing education, and ensure patient safety remains paramount. She envisions nurses working confidently at the top of their scope and pursuing specialty certifications aligned with their passions.

“Professionalism and kindness define nursing,” she says. “We care for people at their most vulnerable. When challenges arise, I always return to my ‘why.’ That’s what keeps you grounded.”
