I get asked this all the time! First, making sure your child is getting enough fluid, and then work on slowly increasing fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables have lots of the "good" bacteria and can be more beneficial than a probiotic supplement itself.

It can take many times of exposure to try a new food. But keep offering and you can always start with small portions. Keep things out on the counter so they are more likely to grab.

Try different presentations as well! My daughter would not eat strawberries whole, cause of the "mushy" spot, but if I sliced them up, she had no trouble eating them. 🍓

Carrots? Try the carrot chips or shredded carrots instead of carrot sticks. 🥕

Who can p*el an orange faster, you or our child?🍊

Remember to slice up grapes as they can be a choking hazard. 🍇

Lemon juice will help keep apples from turning brown once sliced. 🍎🍋🍏

🥬Having a garden is a great way to introduce your child to food they may not normally try. Get them involved with picking out seedlings (or seed packets) from the store, planting, watering, and then harvesting. And of course, we at Peace Physical Therapy like kids eating fruits and veggies to help them stay regular.

🥕Make predictions- How big or small is that carrot under the dirt? How many cherry tomatoes will we grow?

🍅Have fun getting dirty! For those with sensory challenges- how does the soil feel when it is dry vs when it is wet. Is the vegetable smooth or bumpy?

🏠Short on space? You can grow certain veggies and herbs in containers on a patio and get the same great experience and memories with your kids.

🌿Not a gardener? Start with herbs like mint, basil, parsley, and oregano. Easy to grow and kids like eating mint right off the plant, plus it is good for flavoring water. Basil, parsely, and oregano can be harvested and used fresh or dried and saved for wintertime. We do that in our house to save money on herbs which can be pricey.

The awareness in pelvic health for women has grown the last several years which is great!! But sometimes people forget it isn't just women that can have pelvic floor dysfunction.

Kids can have pelvic floor dysfunction which can cause constipation, urinary retention, p*e or p**p leaks, bedwetting and more.

Q: What is that crescent looking thing that I measured using my rehabilitative ultrasound?

A: Re**al Diameter

In these photos I measured the re**al diameter (through an ultrasound on the abdomen) of a 10-year-old child who was suffering from p**p leaks.

When a child withholds stool, the re**um can stretch to accommodate the stool. The longer it stays in there, the harder it gets and more p**p collects. Then new soft poo can come behind it and can leak right around it causing poo leaks that kids aren't even aware are occurring. This is called encopresis and something I see a lot at Peace Physical Therapy.💩

After working with us for 6 weeks, you can see this child's re**um went from 50 mm to our goal of less than 30 mm. He went from having infrequent bowel movements on the toilet and daily p**p leaks, to daily BMs on the toilet and no p**p leaks. 🎉 His re**um is healing from being overstretched. It can take 6-12 months for the re**um to shrink back and stay down, so having daily BMs is so important for kids who are working through encopresis.

Small progress is still progress, even if the finish line seems so far away.

When dealing with toileting challenges, remember to praise for attempts and not discipline for a leak. Give them lots of encouragement and make sure they know you love them! 💓

Tips for Raising Kids

There are so many ways to create connection and involvement in your child’s life. Parenting can be an up-and-down journey. Our counselors at Santos Counseling PLLC, work with kids and parents. Reach out today to explore how counseling can help you move forward in life.

1. Become involved in your child’s life. You can do this by:

Joining their school PTA
Signing up to be a coach for their team
Having a date night with them
Asking them about their day each and every day
Emailing their teachers and community supporters
Becoming friends with them on Facebook and other social media

2. Observe your child’s behavior by always remaining involved. When you notice a positive or negative change, be the first to ask (why?)…

Ask questions each and every day. (Questions mean that you care)
Did anything crazy happen today? I really want to hear a great story.
What was the best part of your day?
What was the worst part of your day?
If you could tell me one thing that really made your day awesome, what would it be?

Don't hesitate to seek professional counseling when needed. It can provide valuable insights and personalized strategies for your unique parenting situation.

Sound familiar anyone??

Traditional medical providers are SO busy and often don't have the time to help guide you or help your family through a bowel or bladder issue.

Often times pediatric pelvic floor physical therapy can be the missing piece for kids dealing with encopresis, urinary leakage, pelvic pain, and more. Reach out if you want to learn more!

☮️Spent some time the other day with a kiddo talking about when we rush through toileting and don't fully empty the bladder. When we do that, we may p*e some, but still have some in our bladder which can increase our chance of leaks and having to go back to the bathroom sooner.

☮️Set a timer either on the phone or using a game sand timer ⏳ to help your child sit longer.

☮️Make sure the seat is comfortable or your child is more likely to rush off of it. Consider a different toilet seat or a seat insert. And don't forget the stool under their feet if their feet don't touch the ground.
