"If we were to reduce culturally [competent] care to one activity that even the busiest clinician should be able to find time to do, it would be to routinely ask patients (and where appropriate, family members) what matters most to them in the experience of illness and treatment. Clinicians can then use that crucial information in thinking through treatment decisions and negotiating with patients."

- Daniel Epner, MD & Walter Baile, MD

As a mother and Doula, labor days hits a little different for me.

It reminds me of my very own labor.

I spent 3 days contracting every 3-4 minutes. All day, all night. The first 3/4 of time was unmedicated, the last home stretch I decided to have an epidural.

It was long, I was tired, and I was ill from a sinus infection.

I was ready for some much needed rest. I ended up being very sad at the end of it all because I did not fulfill my goal of having an unmedicated birth.

However, I have grown and learned that my decision was absolutely ok. I did what I thought was best for me and our little one at that time.

I am beyond grateful for my birth team and supporters who came to visit me/stand by my side during labor and birth. It has been years since this event but this day and experience holds a special place in my heart and it is one of the many reasons why I chose to become a doula.

You have autonomy of your body and your baby.

The more knowledge you have regarding the process, and the more informed you are overall, the better prepared you will be.

Just because you have all the information, does NOT mean you have to consent. Declining is a valid choice.

It's also not just about having a bunch of information but understanding what to do with it and how to process it.

Ask your Doula to help you with this as you cope in pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum.

Baby blues is not postpartum depression.

Baby Blues: include periods of random sadness or mood swings. This begins a few days after birth and can last up to a couple of weeks. Ultimately, baby blues is short-lived. The likely cause could be due to a fluctuation in hormones.

Postpartum Depression (PPD): Is a more serious medical condition that includes things like feelings of hopelessness, extreme overwhelm, intense anger or irritability, etc.

Knowing the difference between the two is important. Remember being informed is essential during your childbirth journey.

“People learn how to treat you based on what you accept from them”

You can be nice, respectful and polite and still set clear, healthy boundaries.

In order to start setting any kind of boundaries you have to look within.

How do you feel about yourself? How do you view yourself?
How do you treat yourself?
How do you value yourself?
How do you feel you deserve to be treated?

When you understand these things about yourself, and what you want and need. It will be easier to communicate your boundaries to others.

Setting boundaries in the beginning of a relationship/friendship can avoid a lot of unnecessary tension or side-eyes. Why don’t we do this more often? Employers have no problem doing it. When you sign the dotted line, you agree to their boundaries. When you go to an establishment or hire a business they communicate their wants/needs in the form of a contract, deposit, or signage.

Don’t assume people know how to treat you unless you have communicated so in a clear, comprehensible manner.

Knowing what you want or need for yourself can also help you set clear boundaries during your pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. During these times you will encounter situations from all angles of life that will either allow people to walk over you or they will need to operate within your expressed boundaries.

If you don't start speaking up for yourself, people will continue to use your connection with them as they see fit for THEMSELVES. Trust, they are looking out for them, so make sure you are looking out for you, respectfully.

"Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better." - Maya Angelou

Part of the problem with society today is everything is moving entirely too fast. You wonder why you feel like you are always stressed, feeling ill, irritated and stuck in "go" mode. We are literally trying to keep up...but keep up with what exactly? Growing older quicker? That's exactly what all the stress is leading to (aging in fast forward motion).

There's no amount of skin cream or magical product that will...
