Dr. Thomas Stuckey has spent decades asking a simple question: How can we do this better?

At Cone Health, that question has shaped some of the most important advances in heart care. Alongside colleagues like Dr. Bruce Brodie, Dr. Stuckey helped move the field forward and improve outcomes for patients and families across our community.

The Dr. Thomas D. Stuckey Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Research and Education will help carry that work forward, recruiting leading physicians and advancing cardiovascular research for generations to come.

Four decades ago, a small team in Greensboro helped transform the way heart attacks are treated around the world. ❤️‍🩹

Alongside Dr. Bruce Brodie and colleagues, Dr. Thomas Stuckey helped pioneer emergency coronary angioplasty — proving that a community health system could lead major advances in heart care.

Their work pushed the field forward so significantly that they were described as “medical mavericks.”

That same spirit of innovation continues today as Cone Health builds the next generation of cardiovascular leadership through the Dr. Thomas D. Stuckey Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Research and Education.

🌷As spring arrives, many in our community observe Passover and Easter, two meaningful traditions that, while distinct, share powerful common themes of renewal, hope and freedom.

Both holidays invite reflection on resilience, compassion and the enduring strength of community. They are times centered on gathering with loved ones, honoring tradition and looking forward with renewed purpose. These shared ideals resonate deeply with who we are at Cone Health and the way we care for one another and the communities we serve.

"To all who are observing Passover or Easter, I wish you a season filled with peace, meaning and hope. Thank you to everyone for continuing to show kindness, respect and care in all that you do." - Dr. Paul Krakovitz, Cone Health CEO.

Many of you joined us for the ribbon cutting of our two new mobile health units.🎉 This is significant for our communities! Why?

➡️ Because N.C. is one of the few states seeing rising birth numbers, yet early prenatal care continues to lag in the Piedmont Triad.

➡️ Nearly 1 in 4 women in the region does not receive first‑trimester care, and Guilford and Forsyth counties rank among the lowest in the state for early prenatal visits.

➡️ Launching the OB/GYN mobile unit helps close this gap by bringing timely, trusted maternal care directly into neighborhoods where it is needed.

➡️ Heart disease also remains a major health concern in the Piedmont.

➡️ In 2022, heart disease was the leading cause of death in Guilford County, with a mortality rate of 181 deaths per 100,000 residents.

➡️ The Cone Health Healthy Heart mobile unit helps address this need by offering screenings, education, and preventive care for conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol—conditions that drive much of the region’s cardiovascular risk.

Together, both units make preventive care easier for families to stay healthier throughout pregnancy and beyond.
