Bessie's Dedication to Patient Care: A Glimpse into a Thursday Encounter

July 13, 2023, may have been just another day for many, but for one patient in dire need of her medication, it was a day of anxiety and uncertainty. Bessie, a dedicated healthcare worker, exemplified what patient-centric care truly means on this day. Her quick thinking and compassionate approach ensured that the patient not only received her medication but also felt genuinely cared for.

An Unexpected Call

It began with a call from a distressed patient. She had run out of her medication, a critical medicine used to treat Type 2 diabetes. Missing doses or abruptly stopping the medication can lead to complications, making it crucial for the patient to have a steady supply.

Navigating Online Resources

In the age of technology, online solutions often come to the rescue. Understanding the urgency, Bessie promptly assisted the patient in completing an online Patient Assistance Program (PAP) form. These programs are designed to help patients obtain their medications, especially when they are facing financial difficulties or other barriers. Thanks to Bessie's familiarity with the system and her commitment, the patient was approved swiftly.

A Hurdle Emerges

However, the story didn't end there. The Clinical Pharmacy Practitioner (CPP) was unavailable, creating another potential delay in the patient receiving her medication. Time was of the essence.

Bessie’s Proactive Solution

Not one to be deterred by roadblocks, Bessie took the initiative to contact the primary care physician's (P*P) office. Her aim? To secure a temporary solution while waiting for the patient's shipment of medication. Through her persistent efforts and collaboration with the P*P office, Bessie secured a two-week supply of sample medications for the patient. This ensured that the patient had her required medication until her full shipment arrived, preventing any potential health risks or complications.

Conclusion

Bessie's actions on that Thursday encapsulate the very essence of patient-centered care. She didn’t merely do her job; she went above and beyond, ensuring the well-being of the patient at every step.

Stories like these underscore the importance of compassionate and dedicated healthcare workers in our system. For that patient, Bessie wasn't just a provider; she was a lifeline.

Happy International Women’s Day!

Today, we celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world. It's a day to recognize the progress that has been made towards gender equality and to acknowledge the challenges that women still face.
Value-based care is all about improving patient outcomes while reducing costs, and women have been at the forefront of this movement, driving innovation and transformation in healthcare. From clinicians to researchers to executives, women have made significant contributions to value-based care by bringing their unique perspectives, skills, and expertise to the table.

We honor the trailblazing women who have helped to shape the future of healthcare and who continue to inspire us to do better and be better. We also recognize the challenges that women still face in healthcare, including unequal pay, underrepresentation in leadership positions, and biases in clinical research.

As we continue to strive for gender parity in healthcare, let us remember that diversity and inclusion are essential for achieving our goal of providing high-quality, affordable healthcare for all.
