🤔What Happens When Spiritually Meets Diet Culture???

I remember sitting in a religious service one day, listening to a sermon about spiritual fasting for Lent. Side note: If you’re not familiar with Lent, it’s a season in many Christian-informed traditions that lasts 40 days, and leads up to Easter. It’s essentially meant to be a time of self reflection and spiritual discipline, often involving giving up certain habits, attachments or distractions as a form of spiritual devotion.

At one point during the sermon, I remember the pastor using a comparison about how, when we say we’re going to stay away from things like cake, “the devil” often comes in and whispers, “It’s OK to have a little bit.”

In that moment, I just remembered my inner therapist rolling their eyes and thinking… Aww $@&?!, here we go!

👀👉🏽There’s been a recent proposal to ban the purchase of “junk food” using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. while providing appropriate access to food and nutrition is a concern, from a social justice perspective, villainizing and banning access to “junk food“ is problematic. First, what qualifies as “junk food? “ Are you referring to processed foods that are usually available in food deserts because they are affordable and easily accessible? Why not work to reduce barriers to accessing “healthier” foods by getting rid of food deserts and making fresh fruits and vegetables more accessible?

This proposal misses the mark because it ignores key social determinants of health, such as systemic stressors, and misguidedly frames one’s diet as the primary issue, reinforcing tired racial and class-related stereotype, such as the “fat black welfare queen trope.” Therapy truth is, a person who eats fresh, “healthy foods” every day but still lives in poverty and under constant stress, can still be at risk for poor healthcare outcomes.

Here’s what to prepare for…

1️⃣ Social media algorithms possibly restricting or suppressing body positivity, size diversity or fat liberation related content

2️⃣ Social media platforms/algorithms amplifying toxic diet culture-centered content (more than they already are)

3️⃣ Possible pushback against state laws that protect against weight discrimination

4️⃣ Performative brands, celebrities or influencers who jumped on the “body positivity” bandwagon for clout will now revert back to promoting toxic diet culture

Here are some of the ways that policy changes under a new administration will VERY LIKELY impact ED recovery:

1. Potential cuts to SNAP/WIC programs, further increasing food insecurity
2. Reduced access to mental health and dietetic care if Medicaid/ACA cuts happen
4. An increased push against weight/size inclusive policies that prevent things like weight discrimination on a state level and these laws are very unlikely to happen federally at least for the next four years. Sorry to inform you.
5. potential public health budget cuts impacting eating disorder research
