Juneteenth (June 19th) is the day when African Americans and Americans alike remember, celebrate, and recognize the abolishing of the laws that kept enslaved Africans bound to lives of racism, trauma, and inhumane treatment.
More specifically, on June 19th, 1865 enslaved African Americans in Texas were finally given the information that they had been freed from lives of servanthood and no longer bound by law to live lives under the foot of white suppression.
Although slavery had been outlawed months prior, some states (Texas being the last) attempted to keep enslaved African Americans from gaining this information.
General Gordon Granger announced to the Union Army in Galveston, TX that all enslaved African Americans were now legally free.
This is the significance of June 19th and why African Americans celebrate.
However, the work still wasn’t done. Slavery would not come to an end nationally until the Emancipation Proclamation was created; followed by the end of the civil war, and the legalization of the 13th Amendment.
