Congratulations to one of our very own Spr' 11 initiates, Mr. Brandon Yates, for all of his many accomplishments!
Congrats to Brandon Yates, MS4!
Brandon is a scholar of the 2017 cohort of the Service-Learning Distinction Track here at Brody. He was selected to present his capstone project at the 2020 Wilbert C. Jordan Student Research Forum hosted by the Student National Medical Association at the 56th Annual Medical Education Conference. Brandon was entered into the Community Service category. The purpose of his project was to understand the effectiveness and feasibility of introducing pregnancy-related educational videos for the high-risk obstetric patient population. Contraception, lactation, postpartum red flags, and postpartum depression were chosen as educational video topics. Studies have shown that a low level of health literacy can lead to poor health outcomes. Most health materials are written at higher reading levels than most adults understand. Communication through videos can serve as an engaging and attractive vehicle for delivering information to patients whether you have a 3rd-grade reading level or background in higher education. Due to the current pandemic, the conference was done virtually. During the closing ceremony, it was announced that Brandon's poster was awarded first place. Project partners were fellow Brody students Mansi Trivedi, Radhi Kothadia and Whitney Green and Dr. Paul Swaney served as their mentor.
