As Read Across America Week comes to a close, we would like to shine a spotlight on some of the reading resources available at Carolina Pediatrics.

In-Office Reading: Our lobby is filled with a variety of books for you to enjoy while waiting for your appointment.

Little Free Library: Just outside our lobby doors, you'll find our Little Free Library. Feel free to drop off a book or take one home.

Reach Out and Read Partnership: In collaboration with our clinicians, Reach Out and Read utilizes well-child visits to promote early literacy through books and shared reading experiences. This program supports caregivers in nurturing healthy relationships with infants and young children. As the only literacy model endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Reach Out and Read impacts 4.8 million children nationwide each year.

With more and more measles cases spreading through SC and into NC, it's important to remembr that measles is more than just a rash... It’s a serious virus that can lead to severe complications, especially in young children. Unfortunately, misinformation is spreading online, downplaying its risks.

🔹 About 1 in 5 unvaccinated individuals with measles will require hospitalization.
🔹 Severe complications can include pneumonia and brain swelling, which can be life-threatening.

The good news? The MMR vaccine is safe and highly effective at preventing measles. Protect your child and your community by staying up to date on vaccinations.

This weekend is Superbowl Sunday, and we've got some snack ideas for the whole family.

1. Air Fryer Buffalo Cauliflower Bites: These offer the same tangy, spicy flavor as traditional wings but are loaded with fiber and nutrients. Roasting or air-frying them creates a crispy texture that kids love, especially when paired with a yogurt-based ranch dip.

2. Guacamole with Veggie Sticks or Baked Chips: Avocados are full of fiber and healthy fats, making this a filling and nutritious option. Serving it with colorful bell peppers, carrot sticks, and baked tortilla chips makes it engaging for kids to dip and eat.

3. Apple Nachos: A sweet and healthy alternative to savory appetizers, apple nachos consist of sliced apples drizzled with nut butter (or sunflower butter) and topped with a few mini chocolate chips or dried fruit. To prevent browning, toss the apples in a little lemon juice first.

4. Baked Sweet Potato Fries: A nutritious alternative to regular French fries, these are high in fiber and Vitamin A. They can be baked in the oven until crispy and served with a side of ketchup or yogurt dip.

5. "Touchdown" Fruit Bowl: Arrange fresh, colorful fruit in bowls according to team colors to make it thematic. Options include blueberries and pineapple (blue/gold) or strawberries and kiwis (red/green).

Our first New Parent Orientation of the year kicks off February 5th and you can still register by contacting our Family Liaison at familyconnect@cptriad.com or calling 336-574-4280 to reserve your space.

Offered in a virtual group setting, our new parent orientation guides expecting parents through the complex process of selecting the right pediatrician, understanding the appointment process and what to expect during those first few weeks at home with your new baby.

One of our pediatricians will review topics that include an overview of the practice, newborn care in the hospital and at home, and review immunizations.
