Balance is like any other skill – it requires practice to maintain and improve βœ…

Challenging your balance with simple exercises can make a real difference in preventing falls πŸƒ

Simple Balance Exercises to Try Start with these basic exercises, using a sturdy chair or counter for support if needed:
● Single-leg stands: Hold for 10-30 seconds on each foot
● Eyes-closed standing: Stand with feet together, eyes closed for 10-15 seconds
● Chair rises: Get up from a chair without using your hands
● Heel-to-toe walking: Walk in a straight line, placing one foot directly in front of the other

🌟Important: Always have something sturdy nearby to grab if you feel unsteady, and stop if you feel dizzy or uncomfortable. 🌟

In 2022, a study in JAMA Neurology reported that the optimal number of steps associated with lower dementia risk was about 9,800 steps a day. But even people who walked about 3,800 steps a day still reduced that risk.

A study published in March in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggested that any amount of daily steps above 2,200 was associated with a reduced risk of death and cardiovascular disease, with the lowest mortality risk coming at between 9,000 and 10,500 steps a day

Federal physical activity guidelines urge adults to sit less, move more and accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week.

"This research shows that the number of steps we should be striving for to generate benefits for cardiovascular disease is lower than 10,000, maybe between 5,000 and 6,000 steps per day, which is pretty much the equivalent of 150 minutes per week," Lobelo said.

For many people, Paluch said, that 10,000 figure can be intimidating, no matter how appropriate it may be for a marketing campaign.

"If you're not there, don't become overwhelmed and throw in the towel," she said. "Think about progressive improvements and working them into your lifestyle and your schedule. Park farther from the store. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. The great thing about steps is we can fit them into our daily lives."
