Yesterday, I had the pleasure of observing the Martin County Cooperative Extension Try Healthy program in action with Smiling Faces Daycare, and it was truly a joyful and inspiring experience!

The children were excited as they made smoothies using the blender bike! A fun and interactive way to connect physical activity with healthy eating. They quickly caught on to the message that moving your body and eating nutritious foods can help keep you strong and protect you from getting sick.

They also had a blast sampling a variety of fruits and trying a flavorful veggie stir-fry. Many were eager to taste new things and talk about their favorites!

A special shoutout to Jean Brownfield, who led the lesson with energy and creativity. Her engaging style made learning about health fun, and it was clear the kids were fully engaged and soaking in every moment.

This is what Try Healthy is all about. Empowering our youngest learners to build healthy habits for a lifetime! 💚🍓🥦🚲

The Move Your Way® campaign, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, offers a variety of free resources designed specifically for older adults to support healthy aging through physical activity.

These materials provide clear guidance on the types

and amount of physical activity recommended for those aged 65 and older, helping them incorporate movement into their daily lives safely and effectively. The campaign includes fact sheets, posters, videos, and social media content that offer motivation and practical tips to stay active.

In addition to educational materials, the campaign provides interactive tools such as the Move Your Way Activity Planner, which allows older adults to create personalized weekly exercise plans.

There is also a Community Playbook designed to help organizations promote physical activity among seniors by offering strategies for partnering with local groups and tailoring resources to specific audiences. These tools make it easier for both individuals and communities to encourage and maintain active lifestyles.

All resources are freely available in English and Spanish and can be downloaded for use in healthcare settings, community centers, and online platforms. For organizations seeking to customize materials with logos or tailored messaging, the CDC State and Community Health Media Center offers additional options. These accessible resources from the Move Your Way® campaign are valuable for promoting physical activity and supporting the health and well-being of older adults across communities.

Understanding the specific w**ds in your garden is essential. Different w**ds require different control methods, so accurate identification helps in choosing the most effective strategy.

Implement practices such as proper spacing, mulching, and crop rotation can suppress w**ds. Maintaining healthy soil and plant vigor can also reduce w**d competition.

Regular hand-pulling or hoeing can be effective, especially when w**ds are young. Be cautious to remove the entire root system to prevent regrowth.

When necessary, select appropriate herbicides and apply them according to label instructions. Consider spot treatments to minimize environmental impact.

During a recent visit to Granville County, I saw firsthand how the Try Healthy initiative is transforming communities, one partnership at a time.

Led by Wendy Tatum, Food and Built Environment Associate Granville County is a powerful example of how Cooperative Extension can bring together local partners to address food insecurity in real, lasting ways. Here’s what we witnessed:

Community Collaboration:
A local farm to table restaurant owner Marc from Verdigris Restaurant at Oxford Oaks Distillery is partnering with Try Healthy and Mother Love INC to help feed the homeless, showing how business and service can go hand in hand.

Creative Engagement:
The Farm to Fridge program has its own custom-designed logo thanks to local talent building visibility and pride around this vital resource.

Access to Healthy Food:
we visited a Farm to Fridge location that’s often emptied within an hour of being stocked. That’s how strong the community need and response has been.

Economic Support for Local Farmers:
At the Saturday Farmers Market, local growers offer fresh produce, with several accepting EBT. That means more families can access healthy, local food.

The Takeaway:
When Try Healthy enters a county, it doesn’t just offer programs it helps spark systems change, through collaboration, creativity, and care! Try Healthy Associates like Wendy are helping build a healthier future.

Wendy—keep organizing, leading, and making a difference one day at a time. One partnership at a time.

If you’re tired of wasting food or wondering how long your groceries will stay fresh, the FoodKeeper app is the solution you need. Developed by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service in collaboration with Cornell University and the Food Marketing Institute, this app provides expert advice on how to store all kinds of food and beverages to keep them fresh for as long as possible. It includes information on proper storage techniques for over 400 items—everything from fruits and vegetables to meat, dairy, and pantry staples.

The app helps you understand the best temperature for refrigeration or freezing, how to organize your fridge and pantry for maximum freshness, and the shelf life of various items. It even offers tips on when to throw something away based on its storage conditions, helping you avoid food waste. You can set reminders for when items need to be used, ensuring nothing gets forgotten in the back of your fridge. Plus, the app is regularly updated with new food safety guidelines to keep you on track.

Stretch Food Dollars

Meal planning doesn’t have to be complicated, and it can save you time, money, and stress. Start by checking your fridge, freezer, and pantry to see what ingredients you already have, then build your weekly meals around those items. Write down your plan for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks to stay organized and avoid impulse buys. Choose quick, easy meals for busy days and save more time-consuming recipes for weekends or when family can help.

Include a mix of fresh, frozen, and shelf-stable foods so you’re ready for any schedule or season. Don’t forget to plan for leftovers, they’re perfect for quick lunches or non-cooked dinners. Keep a running grocery list on your fridge or phone and update it as you run out of things. Organize your list by store sections to make shopping faster and easier.

A little plan each week can go a long way toward healthier, budget-friendly meals your whole family will enjoy.

Radishes are more diverse than most people realize. While the most common variety is the small, round red radish with a white center, there are many other types, including pink, purple, white, and even black radishes. The taste of raw radishes is often described as "peppery" or "bitey," offering a refreshing sharpness that contrasts with other vegetables.

They’re crunchy, low-calorie, and packed with Vitamin C, making them a smart snack or colorful addition to your meals. While they’re known for their peppery bite when raw, roasting or sautéing them brings out a milder, slightly sweet flavor. Try tossing them into stir-fries or roasting them with other root veggies for a fresh twist. They are fat-free, cholesterol-free, and low in sodium, with the added benefit of Vitamin C, which supports immune function and skin health. Radishes also contain small amounts of potassium and folate, contributing to overall health.
