We are continuously sold the idea of the miraculous turnaround. The 7-day nervous system reset, 3-day detox cleanse, crash diets, biohacking shortcuts, productivity and dopamine hacks. And slowly overtime, without even realizing it, our expectation has grown to experiencing all aspects of our life at lightning speed.
As a massage therapist the expectation I often experience from my clients is a quick fix to a chronic, deeply rooted problem that has been built by the body over the years in a form of habitual movement patterns, sedentary lifestyle and ,quite honestly, neglect masked in the form of martyrdom. The request is almost always the same: “Can you fix my achy shoulder, painful back, tennis elbow, tech neck etc.?” As if all that should dissipate in an hour. But growth and healing should not be instant, feel dramatic and be visible every single day.
Real progress is usually quiet and often goes unnoticed. It grows out of consistent, (sometimes) inconvenient changes that are filled with doubt. It looks like showing up for yourself when, seemingly, nothing exciting is happening. It feels slow, because it is meant to be that way to fully integrate it for a sustainable life practice. But in that slowness we don’t recognize that it is working.
What if the miracle we are looking for isn’t in speed- but in consistency?
What if we have to move through a breakdown before experiencing a breakthrough? And what if that breakthrough is made up of a small collection of unglamorous decisions made over and over again until the urgency for a quick fix dissipates and the sensation of empowerment takes its place?
Progress is not instant. It is layered. Multifaceted. Earned. It takes time. It is often invisible - until one day it isn’t!
I invite you to explore the stillness that comes over you during a massage, it can often help you navigate the speed of life.
