Spring is in the air, and kids are starting to play outside.
Could the kids be exposed to lead in the dirt?

Protect young children from possible lead exposure in soil by:
• ensuring children do not eat soil or put soil into their mouths
• removing shoes in the house to limit soil from being brought in
• limit exposure to bare soil - use sandboxes (and cover when not in use)
• cover bare soil with grass or mulch
• testing the soil to determine if it is safe

For more information on lead exposure: https://www.cdc.gov/lead-prevention/about/index.html

UGA Cooperative Extension provides cost-effective soil testing (https://aesl.ces.uga.edu/soil.html) that includes testing for lead.
Contact your county extension office for more information.

WIC families often ask questions about eating fish when pregnant and breastfeeding. I like to share information from the FDA about recommending serving sizes of fish based on mercury levels and discuss which types of fish are best to eat. I also enjoy discussing some key nutrients found in fish and how they can be beneficial to health. These nutrients may help to provide benefits in brain health, heart health, and cognitive development for babies during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

My name is Yahaira Cuevas-Nunez, and I have been with WIC for 7 months as a Nutritionist. My favorite tip to discuss with my WIC families is the importance of consuming Vitamin C throughout the day to help absorb Iron. Sources of vitamin C such as tomatoes, strawberries, kiwis, and mangos can be paired with various meals and eaten as snacks!

My name is Susannah Christians and I have been a WIC Nutritionist coming up on 6 years this May.

Did you know it can take up to 20 times of tasting a food before a child eats it on a regular basis? Picky eating is a common concern for a lot of parents when their child hits the toddler stage. During this stage, your toddler is developing preferences for specific foods and usually vegetables are at the bottom of that list. Don’t give up just yet!

Smoothies are a great way to incorporate all those “yucky, green vegetables” into their diet while being hidden underneath those yummy, sweet fruits. Here’s a recipe idea to try today!

- 1 cup milk of choice
- 1 small banana (fresh or frozen)
- ½ cup favorite fruit (fresh or frozen) such as berries, apples, kiwi, mango
- ½ cup vegetables (fresh or frozen) such as kale, spinach, frozen riced cauliflower, sweet potatoes or butternut squash

Blend until smooth, additional liquid can be added if it’s too thick!
Optional add – ins: 1 tablespoon nut butter or Greek yogurt for added protein, 2 tablespoons avocado for an added creamy texture!

**Hint: these items can be purchased with your WIC benefits today!
