Spin Up Girl Fibers

Spin Up Girl Fibers A Place for Friends and Fans of Spin Up Girl Fibers Howdy howdy! Spin Up Girl Fibers is my attempt at infusing a little sexy into the world of spinning.

I’m Crystal, aka crittlet on Ravelry, and I’m the fiber-obsessed madam behind Spin Up Girl Fibers. I’m a spinner, a knitter, an occasional crocheter, a dyer, a carder, a comber, and a lover of all things fibery. It’s home to a seductive array of hand-dyed tops – who I lovingly refer to as my painted ladies, carded batts - otherwise known as my Batty Broads, dyed locks – my Untamed Dames, and handspun yarns, who I like to think of as my Twisted Sistas. Stop by the shop and adopt a gal of your own to fondle. Or check out what other folks are doing with their gals in the Spin Up Girl Fibers Rav group - www.ravelry.com/groups/spin-up-girl-fibers.

My finish line shot of all the yarns I spun during Spin Together. I decided to hold off on finishing until after all the spinning was done, so final pics will have to wait for baths and steaming. I was so disappointed the supplies for my wildest art yarn didn’t arrive in time, so I had to come up with something on the fly. Thankfully, I have a ready supply of whimsical yarn decorations on hand and I think what I whipped together spun up beautifully. I had such a blast spinning with Team International again. Such a talented and inspiring group of spinners. Always a pleasure hanging out with these ladies.

Day 1 of Spin Together: My girl was in town and we had a lovely time spinning at this afternoon. We of course packed up our wheels before getting a pic of us spinning, so we decided to pose as non-spinners showing off how we think wheels work.

I wrote on article for a while ago on differential plying in which I identified 4 levels of differential plying and how small changes in how you tension your singles as you ply can alter the look of your plied yarn. If you missed it or want a more hands on experience, I’m very excited to be teaching Differential Pl(a)ying at Carolina Fiber Fest in March. Come join me for a unique workshop exploring what exactly differential plying is, how to ply at each level, and why being able to identify each type is such an important skill to develop for becoming a more intentional, consistent spinner. We’ll go from a balanced ply to a supercoil and everything in between. While this class is an opportunity to learn a few creative plying techniques for anyone wanting to expand their repertoire of textured yarn techniques, it’s a useful class for spinners of all levels. For newer spinners, it’s a chance to gain a better understanding of what’s going in your plied yarns. For experienced spinners, it’s an opportunity to really master plying and produce more consistently plied skeins.

While I prefer spinning most of the time, I do on occasion make things with the yarns I spin like this set of mitts and a cowl. These are the Deviant Mitts by Dragon Hoard Designs. For the cowl, I decided to reinterpret the pattern in the mitts, since a matching pattern wasn’t available. I really love how these turned out. I also have a ton of yarn leftover and I’m giving serious thought to adding a hat to the set, though reinterpreting that pattern for a hat might be a bit outside my wheelhouse.

Also, Cheddar decided to photobomb my shoot. Don’t tell her, but I think I wear it better.

It’s out! The Long Draw issue of Ply Magazine! And I donned my metaphorical lab coat to test whether or not woolen yarns are actually warmer than worsted yarns. The results were fascinating, so be sure to check out the piece.

We said goodbye to our most amazing buddy, Putney, today. A piece of me went with him. He brought so much happiness into our lives. We couldn’t have asked for a better companion to have with us these last 13 and a half years. He was the smartest dog I’ve ever owned. I’ll be lucky to teach Kaiju half of what I taught Putney. He’s struggled this last year after the tie-back surgery. Putney’s the reason we got Kaiju and a weird way, Kaiju helped put a little pep in his step these last few months and gave us the gift of more time with our amazing boy. After a long life of being spoiled rotten, he took his last breath at home surrounded by love and on his favorite couch. He was ready. We love you poopoodoodies.

I was invited to come back to Historic Mendenhall for their Village Fair this past Saturday. I had such a blast. I always have the most interesting conversations with all the non-fiber people who stop by the booth. It’s not often I get to talk people who are genuinely fascinated by what I do.
