Melasma is a common skin condition that causes brown or gray-brown patches on the face, particularly on the forehead, cheeks, nose, and upper lip. It is also known as "mask of pregnancy"; because it is more common in women during or after pregnancy.
The exact cause of melasma is unknown, but it is believed to be related to hormonal changes, such as those that occur during pregnancy or while taking birth control pills. Other potential triggers include: sun exposure, stress, certain medications, and genetics.
Melasma typically presents as:
-Blotchy, brown, or gray-brown patches of skin
-Patches that may be symmetrical or asymmetrical
-Patches that may worsen with sun exposure
-No other symptoms, such as pain or itching
There is no cure for melasma, but there are treatments that can help to improve its appearance. Treatment options include Chemical Peels, Topical Serums or creams, and Laser Resurfacing.
