Happy first birthday to Luma! And what an incredible year! I feel so privileged to be able to do what I love. So lucky to be a trusted ear and safe space in a world that can feel so chaotic. My little business wouldn’t be here without the support of the community and many friends I have made along the way.

Struggling to sleep? Addressing insomnia can be complex or simple, depending on the person. The goal is to first identify the root cause. Anxiety and depression often cause issues with sleep. Neurodivergent individuals struggle with sleep at a much higher rate, at least 50-60%! This can look like depression, anxiety, or even new onset OCD. Thankfully there are many safe, effective medication options to support you during this time. It can take years for folks with Bipolar Disorder to be properly diagnosed and treated. Many are told they are treatment resistant or trial dozens of medications without improvements in their symptoms (and often feeling worse on medication). This is not an exhaustive list describing bipolar features, but includes some of the “red flags” clinicians should look for. The best way to diagnose bipolar disorder is through a thorough evaluation including family history, mental health history starting in childhood, and past medication responses.

Wellbutrin/bupropion is an amazing medication, but we do not typically recommend it for anxiety disorders. It is approved to treat Depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and Smoking Cessation. Off-label, we use it often for ADHD treatment. The medication is often described as “energizing,” which is sometimes too activating for folks with anxiety disorders. In some cases it can worsen anxiety symptoms or cause trouble sleeping.

Finding the right psychiatric medications can be complicated and frustrating. Around 40-50% of individuals with ADHD are estimated to also have an anxiety disorder. What does this mean for medications?

Most of the medications we use for ADHD can worsen anxiety, causing symptoms like racing thoughts and insomnia. If we treat anxiety without treating ADHD, many people lose the adrenaline and cortisol that was actually helping them function. They suddenly feel unproductive and unmotivated.
