Do you really need that thing—or are you just saying that because someone else already has it?
In this episode, we’re talking about how the language we use—especially around needs and wants—can shape our mental health, our relationships, and our sense of peace.

I break down:
— The difference between a need vs. a want
— How mislabeling wants as needs creates urgency, anxiety, and emotional pressure
— Why comparison convinces us we’re “behind” or missing something
— How to reframe your thoughts and take your power back
— And why being honest with your language is a form of emotional regulation

It’s not about shaming your wants.
It’s about knowing the difference—so you stop chasing everything like your survival depends on it.

Not every therapist diagnoses the same—and that can make a big difference.
Some slap a label on you after one session.
Some wait a few weeks.
Some are required to diagnose because of insurance.
And some only see your right now... not your full story.

This week on Whiteboard Wednesday, I’m breaking down:
— Why choosing the right therapist matters
— How a diagnosis can help (like getting the support you need)
— When it becomes a problem (like diagnosing you in the middle of a crisis)
— And what that label might impact in your real life (job, travel, benefits, and more)

A diagnosis can be helpful. But it’s not just a formality—it’s something that can follow you.
So let’s talk about how to ask questions, advocate for yourself, and make sure your care actually fits you.

We often confuse our feelings with facts. We react instead of reflect. And we’ve normalized acting on emotions, impulsively and often not thinking a consequences, without pausing to ask: “what else could be going on?”

In this episode of Whiteboard Wednesday, I’m breaking down:
— the difference between facts and feelings
— the gender bias around “logic vs. emotion”
— Wise Mind (from DBT) and how to use it in real life
— how cognitive distortions can Influence our interpretations
— and how our unchecked emotional reactions are damaging relationships, communities, and culture.

We all feel. That’s not the problem.
The problem is when we let our feelings run the whole show.

Whiteboard Wednesdays are here… and we’re kicking it off with the truth about change.

We talk a lot about wanting to “do better” and “make a change” — but let’s be real: change doesn’t happen just because we say we want it. It requires:
🧠 Ability, Opportunity, and Willingness
🫀 Awareness, Acceptance, and Action

In this week’s lesson, I’m walking you through what actually creates change — from the science (Motivational Interviewing + the Stages of Change Model) to what I’ve learned in sessions and in real life.

Whether you're in denial, preparing for something new, or trying to maintain your progress… this one’s for you. Don’t miss it.

🧠✨ Welcome to Whiteboard Wednesdays ✨🧠

Every week, I’m pulling out the virtual whiteboard to break down mental health topics I see (and hear) come up the most—whether it’s in session, on social media, or in everyday convos.

From therapy truths to emotional skills to the “wait… nobody told me that?” moments—this space is all about psychoeducation that’s real and relatable.

I’m not here to diagnose you through your screen…
But I am here to help you think differently, feel seen, and maybe even learn something new along the way.

💭 Got a topic you want me to cover? Drop it in the comments or my DMs.
Let’s talk about it.

If you’ve been looking for a therapist who gets it — someone real, honest, and supportive — I got you.

I’m Asya — your local Black therapist ✨
A Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) based in NC. I work with teens, young adults, and families navigating the chaos: trauma, anxiety, identity, grief, self-esteem, and those “what now?” moments.

Whether you’re 15 and trying to fit in, 25 and questioning everything, or just need a space to breathe and be seen — I’m here.

Because therapy doesn’t have to be scary or stiff.
It can be real. It can be empowering. And it can help you create a life that works for you.

So if you’re into authenticity, growth, safe spaces, and making life feel less like chaos and more like yours — you’re in the right place. Welcome 💛

Since January 8, 2025, Progressing through Therapy has been honored to provide in-person counseling services in Wadesboro, expanding our Greensboro-based practice to increase local access to mental health care. This initiative was guided by community input and a shared goal of bringing professional, compassionate support closer to home.

Today, we are writing to share that we will be closing our Wadesboro office EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.

This decision comes after careful consideration of the results of our pilot effort. Over the past six months, we’ve learned a great deal about both the opportunities and challenges of expanding services in Anson County. While we were able to serve several residents and host open house events to encourage dialogue about mental health, overall demand for ongoing in-person counseling was not at the level needed to sustain operations locally, especially given travel and facility costs.

Rather than viewing this change as an ending, we see it as a chance to refocus on what is most needed right now: community education and outreach. Mental health remains essential for everyone, and we believe that reducing stigma, increasing understanding, and building trust are key steps toward meaningful, sustainable care.

While our in-person clinical services will no longer be based in Wadesboro at this time, our team remains deeply committed to supporting the community in other ways. We would welcome the opportunity to partner with schools, churches, local organizations, and workplaces to offer educational workshops or presentations on topics such as:
• Stress and anxiety management
• Coping with life transitions
• Grief and loss
• Emotional regulation skills
• Trauma awareness and support

We hope these efforts can lay the groundwork for stronger community connections and greater comfort with seeking help in the future.
