Hey, I’m Asya—therapist and founder of The Shift Counseling & Wellness.

The Shift was created for people who are tired of doing the same things, feeling the same way, and wondering why nothing is changing… but don’t always know where to start.

This is a space to slow down, get honest, and do the work—at your own pace, but not alone.

Access matters.

The Shift Access Program was created to offer a limited number of reduced-rate therapy spots for those who need more flexibility.

These spots are limited and designed to support individuals who do not have coverage through our accepted insurances and are ready to do the work but need a more accessible starting point.

If this sounds like you, I invite you to reach out and learn more.
Virtual therapy across North Carolina.

I’m excited to share that I am now a Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) Facilitator. 🧘🏽‍♀️

TCTSY is an evidence-based approach designed to support individuals who have experienced trauma by reconnecting with their bodies in a safe, choice-based way. Unlike traditional yoga, there is no hands-on assistance or pressure to perform—everything is invitational and centered on autonomy.

This work is especially meaningful for those who feel disconnected from their bodies, experience chronic stress, or find it difficult to feel present.

I look forward to integrating this into The Shift Counseling and Wellness and creating more spaces for healing that go beyond talk therapy. 💚🪴

A small act of kindness can go a long way. 💛

And if today feels heavy, you deserve that same kindness, too. You don't have to go through it alone.

Life moves fast, and a lot of people are just trying to keep up.

Between work, school, relationships, family expectations, and the pressure to have everything figured out, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, mentally exhausted, or disconnected from yourself.

At The Shift Counseling & Wellness, our goal is to create spaces where people can slow down, reflect, and start making sense of their experiences without judgment.
Our services currently include:
• Individual counseling
• Trauma-informed movement practices
• Outreach and mental health education
• Grief support groups
• Community-based groups

Not everyone processes life the same way. Some people need a place to talk things through. Others benefit from movement, learning practical tools, or being in community with people who understand what they’re going through.

Our work focuses on helping people better understand themselves, develop emotional awareness, and navigate life with more clarity and intention.

If you’re curious about what working together might look like, you can learn more about our services, approach, and pricing on our website or schedule a consultation today at www.theshiftcounseling.com or click the link in my bio.

The Shift is more than a practice.
It’s a movement toward yourself.

At The Shift Counseling & Wellness, we hold space for the real, the raw, and every in-between moment of life — especially for teens and young adults navigating identity, anxiety, trauma, grief, life transitions, and expectations that never fully felt like theirs.

Here, “the shift” becomes an unfolding journey.

👁️ A shift in perspective — how you see yourself, the roles you’ve carried, and the beliefs shaped by your lived experiences.

📖 A shift in your story — moving from silence to speaking up, from surviving to truly living, from confusion to clarity. Honoring where you’ve been while making room for where you’re going.

🔄 A shift in your habits and responses — understanding the ways you’ve coped and protected yourself, recognizing what still serves you, and gently releasing what no longer does.

🪞 A shift in your relationship with yourself — trading self-doubt for self-trust, judgment for curiosity, shame for compassion.

You don’t have to come in ready. You don’t have to have it all figured out.
You just need the willingness to shift — in your time, in your way.

I’m Asya, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate in North Carolina, certified grief counselor, and in the final stages of becoming a Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) Facilitator. My work integrates trauma-informed therapy with embodied practices that support nervous system regulation and sustainable change.

The Shift currently offers virtual therapy across North Carolina, with in-person services available in select locations.

Appointments are now open.

Today I had the privilege of returning to my alma mater to speak with 6th–8th grade students about Kindness 101—and it was a powerful full-circle moment.

We talked about kindness beyond manners and politeness. We explored how kindness is often hardest when life feels overwhelming, when emotions run high, and when being unkind can feel quicker or easier. We discussed how kindness is something we must actively practice and intentionally choose, the real and lasting impact unkindness can have on others and ourselves, and how our everyday choices contribute to our character and how we are remembered long after we leave a space.

As a therapist, I see firsthand how experiences from childhood and adolescence continue to shape self-esteem, relationships, and identity well into adulthood. These conversations matter—because character doesn’t stop developing after middle school, and the way we treat people early on has ripple effects we don’t always see right away.

Grateful for the opportunity to pour back into a community that helped shape who I am, and to remind students that who they are becoming truly matters.

Choose kindness. Every day.

When he was 11, Tyrell Cooley was taking a very high dose of Concerta, along with guanfacine, sometimes used as an adjunct to a stimulant, at night.
“I used to get in trouble a lot in school,” Tyrell recalled. “I had a detention every other day.”

He was frequently anxious and sullen, a result of trauma from his birth mother’s drug use, according to his adoptive mother, Mallory Cooley.

He was medicated not to treat the underlying psychiatric condition, his mother said, but to keep him calm in school. “People just wanted to give him medications to sit still and not actually deal with why he’s doing what he’s doing,” she said.

Tyrell hated medication. “It made me feel drained overall,” he said.

The Cooleys spent a month searching for a family therapy program for Tyrell, who is on Medicaid. Twice a week for about a year a therapist came to their home in Clinton, Miss., and Tyrell’s school.

The Cooleys gradually weaned Tyrell off his medications, feeling that the pills were fueling some of the wild behavior and masking problems that were better dealt with in talk therapy.

Tyrell, now 15, said he feels much better off the medication and after the therapy. “I’m more connected with people,” he said.

Tens of thousands of kids who take prescription ADHD medication also wind up on other powerful psychotropic drugs—including antipsychotics and antidepressants, studies show.

Jennifer Havens, the chair of the department of child and adolescent psychiatry at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, says her field has done children a disservice by failing to recognize trauma—and rather treat manifestations of trauma as ADHD or other psychiatric disorders like bipolar disorder or psychosis.

“We have made a mess and it’s dangerous because some kids really need medication, and if we just said ‘no meds,’ that’s not the answer, but if a kid is on five, six, seven medications, that’s just wrong.”
