What's better - walking or running? And why should you care?
There's a measure called V02 max which has to do with exercise capacity. It also is a marker of healthy longevity, so if you want to live a long, healthy life, you want a good V02 max.
So how do you know what your V02 max is and how do you improve it?
There's a cardiometabolic test I can do that, among other things measures V02 max. You can also get an idea by seeing how much effort your can expend and still be able to talk but not sing.
Exercise improves V02 max. While not everyone has access to a gym, almost everyone has access to a place where they can walk or run.
An article in the New York Times had this to say - Walking is among the world’s most popular forms of exercise, and far and away the most favored in the United States. And for good reason: It’s simple, accessible and effective. Taking regular walks lowers the risk of many health problems including anxiety, depression, diabetes and some cancers.
However, once your body becomes accustomed to walking, you might want to pick up the pace, said Alyssa Olenick, an exercise physiologist and postdoctoral research fellow in the energy metabolism lab at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
The article recommends that when you get used to walking, add sprints.
