Decatur County Memorial Hospital is renewing our Patient & Family Advisory Council (PFAC) — and we’re looking for community members who want to help shape the future of care at DCMH.

PFAC members meet every other month for relaxed, one-hour conversations about hospital services, patient experience, and opportunities to better serve our community. Your ideas and feedback will help guide DCMH leadership as we plan for the future.

𝐑𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡: 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥

Harper was nominated by his speech therapist, Olivia Wilmer. In the last year, Harper has shown great progress with learning how to use his Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device, which is a dedicated tablet that he uses to communicate by choosing picture symbols that have voice output.

Most recently, Harper has learned how to communicate his favorite songs, foods, and activities to his family using his AAC device. When Harper started speech therapy, he was not using words. He is now able to communicate with his family, peers and therapists using words like "help," "bubbles," "Monsters Inc.," "same song again," "different song," "blueberry," "shoes," "swing," and "all done."

Harper's face lights up when others are able to understand what he wants, and he has been working very hard to familiarize himself with his AAC device and increase his expressive vocabulary. Harper is always excited to come to speech therapy and the team has so much fun working with him.

𝐃𝐂𝐌𝐇 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠!

Led by our Patient Accounts team, DCMH donated 28 turkeys and $250 to the Greensburg Community Bread of Life in memory of Phyllis Baughman, former DCMH Director of Patient Accounts. Her compassion and dedication continue to inspire our commitment to serve our community.

These donations will help ensure community members enjoy a warm and welcoming Thanksgiving meal. We’re honored to carry on this tradition and support our neighbors during the holiday season.

For Abby Fleenor, reliable transportation to her medical appointments has been life-changing. “I don’t have to worry about missing my appointments anymore,” she says.

Thanks to DCMH’s transportation program, patients like Abby can focus on their health. The Hospital Foundation of Decatur County is raising funds to expand this vital service and help even more people in our community take charge of their health.

November is recognized as American Diabetes Month, a time dedicated to raise awareness about diabetes and promote prevention and/ or effective management of the disease.

Diabetes can often be misunderstood or oversimplified as being caused by "eating too much sugar," but it is a complex condition impacting over 38 million Americans.

Last Thursday, Decatur County’s first responders and health care teams came together with the support of the American Red Cross for this year’s Battle of the Badges: Blood Drive.

This life-saving event was made possible through the collaborative effort of the Decatur County Department of Health , the Decatur County Sheriff's Department and Decatur County Memorial Hospital. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., community members supporting local law enforcement, emergency services, and public health rolled up their sleeves, literally, to help save lives.

This year’s event was a tremendous success, collecting 34 good units of blood, enough to help save up to 102 lives. Behind every donation was a powerful reminder of what makes the Decatur County community special: compassion, teamwork, and a shared commitment to helping others.

Happy Veterans Day!

In 1922, DCMH was created to serve as a memorial to honor those who served in World War I and over 100 years later, we continue to honor Veterans. This past weekend, DCMH assisted in organizing a weekend of community activities to recognize and express gratitude for our Veterans including a complimentary lunch at the American Legion Post 129.

Local students also took part in creating artwork, thanking our local veterans for their service. Additionally, the DCMH campus is lined with American Flags along Lincoln Street, serving as a reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and dedication for all who have served and continue to serve.
