National Recovery Month
Here are a few reasons to celebrate seniors who choose to stay sober!
Facts about older adults and alcohol from NIH
▪️Older adults metabolize alcohol less efficiently
▪️A younger adult can drink similar amounts of alcohol, but the older adult's blood alcohol level will be higher and stay high longer.
▪️Older adults' central nervous system is more sensitive to alcohol's effects, leading to lower tolerance.
▪️These differences can lead to or worsen chronic illnesses common in older adults (e.g., high blood pressure)
▪️Drinking also increases health-related risks for older adults who take medications that may interact negatively with alcohol.
Whether you are old or young, there’s no doubt that being in recovery from alcohol or substance use disorder is a healthy choice!
