We are excited to continue growing our team at Toman Therapeutic Services to better support the children and families we serve. Please join us in welcoming our newest occupational therapy practitioner, who brings a passion for helping children build confidence, independence, and lifelong skills through play-based, individualized care.

Hi! My name is Leslie Miller and I'm an Occupational Therapy Assistant who is very excited to join the team here at Toman Therapeutic Services. I earned my Associates of Science in Occupational Therapy Assistance from the Community College of Allegheny County in 2007. I come from a background working in a variety of long-term care settings, which helped build a strong foundation in patient-centered care. About 3 years ago, I transitioned into pediatrics and quickly discovered my passion for working with children of all ages. I have worked with school age and currently work full time with the early intervention (3-5) program throughout Westmoreland County. I love supporting kids in developing the skills they need to grow, gain independence, and succeed in their everyday lives. I enjoy bringing creativity and fun into each session, using play and sensory-based activities to keep kids engaged while working toward their individualized goals. I’m excited to support our clients and connect with families along the way!

Today is National Plagiocephaly & Torticollis Awareness Day!

❓ What is Plagiocephaly?
UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh defines Deformational Plagiocephaly as a head shape that is misshapen, uneven, or involves a flat spot. This results from pressure on the developing head (skull) in the womb and/or from a persistent sleep or resting position after birth. Plagiocephaly and/ or brachycephaly does not affect the brain, motor development or intelligence.

❓ What Is Torticollis?
Torticollis is a condition in which a tight neck muscle on one side causes the head to tilt and turn in one direction more than the other. This causes unequal pressure on the head when laying on a surface which can lead to Plagiocephaly. Physical therapy is recommended to stretch, strengthen and improve range of motion at the neck.

❓ What is a Cranial Remolding Helmet?
A cranial remolding helmet, or orthosis, is a device used to treat head shape deformities such as plagiocephaly, brachycephaly and scaphocephaly. The helmet treatment is effective in infants from 3-18 months of age, but optimal when started younger due to the decrease in growth rate as the child ages.

💻Visit https://unionoandp.com/services/cranial-remolding to learn more about our gold-standard Starband solutions and treatment.

❗️ Call our Pediatric Coordinator at 412-599-1148 with questions and to schedule a free scan evaluation to determine if a cranial remolding orthosis is the best option for your baby.
