💛 Meet Susan, a dedicated platelet donor at our Pittsburgh Greentree Donation Center

When Susan’s uncle was diagnosed with bone cancer, he needed platelet transfusions to feel better and keep fighting. While working at Magee, Susan discovered her platelet count was high enough to help. She began donating and never stopped.

Today, Susan has donated platelets more than 100 times at the Greentree Donation Center, giving hope and healing to countless patients like her uncle.

Platelets are vital for cancer treatment, surgery, and trauma care, but they only last 5–7 days. The need is constant.

🚑💉 Life-saving innovation in Pittsburgh

Vitalant joined the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS and UPMC to announce the launch of Whole Blood in the Field, a new prehospital blood program equipping paramedics to transfuse blood at the scene of severe injuries or on the way to the hospital.

Vitalant is proud to help make this possible by ensuring a ready blood supply for patients when and where it’s needed most. As Frances Scher, Vitalant Director of Transfusion Services, shared: “This helps ensure every patient gets the blood they need, at the right place at the right time — whether on the scene of a major accident or in a hospital setting.”

“Blood donations saved my partner’s life and our family.”

Today we sat down with Josh, a Vitalant night-shift technologist, to hear his powerful story. When his partner, Maria, experienced a life-threatening hemorrhage after childbirth at West Penn Hospital, a massive transfusion of 16 blood products saved her life and brought their newborn home healthy.

Josh’s message is clear: blood donors are lifesavers and everyday heroes.

Meet Sherri Kopko, Vitalant’s Director of Operations for the Coagulation Laboratory in Pittsburgh! Sherri manages everything from lab information systems and record management to cost analysis and HIPAA privacy.

She joined Vitalant in 1988 and has built an incredible career by embracing new opportunities in Molecular Diagnostics and Coagulation.

What keeps her excited after all these years? “Each day presents new challenges; it’s NEVER boring! And I work with amazing people, so I’m doubly blessed.”

Fun fact: When Sherri retires, she and her husband plan to travel North America by RV 🚐. Outside of work, she is a Penn State Master Gardener who loves exploring, fleatiquing, crafting and reading.

Life savers — in and out of the lab 🩸

During Vitalant’s Lab Week Fundraiser, our Laboratory and Transfusion Services team came together to raise $810 for HARP (Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh).

HARP provides urgent medical care, rehabilitation, and adoption for injured, orphaned, and homeless animals, giving them a second chance at life.

Thank you to everyone who contributed and made this fundraiser a success. Together, we’re saving lives and strengthening our community in more ways than one.
