We were recently the target of a fake check scam. The client contacted us through email to set up a new move in cleaning job. The person claimed that their secretary accidently mailed a check to us for the amount they meant to give the painter. They wanted us to deposit our check, deduct our payment, and give the remainder to the painter. This raised red flags for us and after replying that we could not do this we received no further reply from the potential client. NEVER accept over payment for goods or services. The scammer's hope is that by the time the bank finds that the check you deposited is fake, they already receive the difference of the over payment and you are in the hole for that amount! We have reported this to the SCDCA. If we had fallen for this scam we would have lost $2150!!! Please be careful everyone. These people are ruthless.
