Liquid gold. Otherwise known as colostrum.

Colostrum is the first milk produced (and may even be present in pregnancy). It is perfect for your baby and will nourish your baby until their nutritional needs change.

Around days 3 to 5, colostrum will transition to a fatty or milk that is lower in protein and is produced in greater volume.

Colostrum is full if the good stuff and has antibodies and nutrients that help prime the immune system too.

Meet Kinley! She was welcomed into the world recently and Great Expectarions doula Bianke got be a part of that welcome.

From her parents, "I cannot thank you enough, you helped make that day forever what we envisioned and I don't have words to show my gratitude.

Also, one of the few very conscious memories I have is the galaxy light on the ceiling and think EVERY momma needs that during labor!"

Some people describe them as feeling like fish bubbles.

Or butterfly wings... or gas. Those first sensations that might be your baby's movements are exciting and usually very welcome. Unlike the first trimester where the tangible signs of pregnancy may be morning sickness and new bras...those gentle flutters are fun and connect you with your growing child in a way vomiting cannot.

When will you feel your baby? That depends on your body type, where the placenta is implanted and how many pregnancies you have had. Average is 14 to 16 weeks (ish). When did you feel your baby? How would you describe those early sensations?

Pregnancy is creative. It's dynamic and it's experienced differently by each person. And you get to do it your way.

REPOST
‘Oh no, you still do Yoga.’ ‘Take it easy.’ ‘You still do all of that stuff.’ ‘You know you shouldn’t, you’re pregnant.’ How about we stop telling people what they should and shouldn’t be doing with their bodies.

No one except one person, knows how hard I have worked to be able to do all of the wonderful things my body can do. I still do Yoga. I still lift weights. I still run up and down stairs and guess what? I feel amazing doing it all. If something was hurting me, I wouldn’t do it. I’m doing the most amazing of all of the things I’ve ever done and I am so excited to give birth to this awesome little human being. Baby already loves his parents so much. It’s so funny. He/she won’t move for anyone else but mommy and daddy. I’ve been on this health journey since 2013 and I don’t plan on stopping even after giving birth. Fitness is my life and if you don’t understand that I’m fine, you don’t understand how miraculous the human body really is!

Not knowing what to expect is always a little scary.

How your birth will unfold is always a bit of a mystery but good preparation makes it better so that you can face with confidence what ever may happen.

How do you prepare?

My best advice is to take a comprehensive and independent birth class - a class that does more than teach you about dilation and effacement. A class that teaches you how to communicate with your providers and with each other about what you need in your labor even as the unexpected may occur.

My second piece of advice is to hire a doula. It's like bringing that really good class with you and she also happens to amazing at hip squeezes. It means you don't have to remember everything. It means you can be who you in birth and have someone there to support that.

It's OK to be nervous about birth, that is actually one of the most common reasons doulas are hired. But preparation makes it less scary!

Today is Rainbow Baby Day. So what is a rainbow baby?

A baby born after a miscarriage or loss is often referred to has a rainbow baby. (I also think of babies placed in families via adoption or surrogacy after a long journey of infertility as rainbow babies.)

I've lost two babies to babies to miscarriage, it's a hard thing no matter the situation. The rainbow is never a replacement for the child that was lost, but it does symbolize how beautiful and amazing it is to bring a baby into the world after such a loss.

As doulas, we see birth a lot and while we take great joy in our clients joy - the rainbow babies often get us in the feels. I'll admit to a few tears when I see them in their parents arms. 💜

Your baby's face.

It's beautiful - obviously! However, a newborn's face may look puffy due to fluid accumulation and due to their experience while you pushed.

Your baby's face will change as the fluid recedes and times passes healing the effects of pushing - but it will be just as cute.

Now what?????

On TV, water breaking is always depicted by a big splash, usually out in public, with hard contractions beginning immediately. The woman is rushed to the hospital where a baby quickly comes out.

In real life, that scenario is pretty rare. More often, clients call and are experiencing a little leaking. They think they may have peed themselves, or it could be the water. Even when they are pretty sure their water broke, many times contractions do not follow.

When your water breaks though, you do have decisions to make as to the course of how you want to proceed with your care. Talking to your provider before you have fluid leaking from your body, is the way to go.

Random bar trivia maybe?

This is the most commonly sold blanket in the US. It's called the Kuddle blanket and here is it's story!

It was all started by a healthcare linen supply company named Medline, located in Illinois. They originally made butcher aprons, but as more births moved out of the home and into the hospitals, the drab cloth that hospitals were using as baby blankets needed an update. and this company went from aprons to blankets.

The white, pink, and blue combination is simple, easy to recognize by staff (so not confused with the knitted blanket from family) and also gender-neutral.

Every year, approximately 1.5 million of this blanket are sold!

Did you know that the creases in a newborn's feet tell us a baby's gestational age?

In general, full-term babies have creases that cover the entire sole of their feet. Premature babies, on the other hand, may only have creases on the front of their feet. And if there are no creases at all, it's a sign that the baby was born very early.
