Leona Learns to Breath BOOK UPDATE:

Patience. Time. Intention. Refinement. Gratitude. Dedication. Joy.

These are all things I’m learning and re-learning as I continue on the road to writing my children’s book, Leona Learns to Breathe. As most things in my life have done, this is taking its sweet time. Mostly because I need breaks and pauses between the steps of the known and unknowns.

The manuscript is 90% done. That part I’ve known how to do. I do it every morning. I love writing, weaving words together, telling a story with sharing. Now comes the unknown - illustrating and publishing!

Since starting Breathe Well Be Well in 2022, I’ve often reflected on the unexpected gifts I’ve received through showing up differently as a business owner and entrepreneur — with my favorite being all the interesting and authentic people I get to meet as a result of my work.

One of those such people is Kate Furman — my illustrator. Since our first coffee meeting to discuss the project, I knew I wanted to work with her. And when she delivered her illustrations I had commissioned to see if she could find the essence of Leona, I knew I had made the right choice.

I cannot tell you how grateful I am to find the people I need when I need them. Point being - when a novice children’s book author (me) shows up at an artist’s studio (Kate) with only a printed word document and leaves with the beginnings of an illustration briefing to help bridge words into visual creations. THIS is Leona showing up for me in ways I cannot even describe. THIS is me trusting I will find what I need, when I need it. THIS is the world, life working FOR me.

And THIS is what I want to share with you in Leona Learns to Breathe.

Thank you for tagging along on this journey thus far and I’ll be sure to drop more details when I have them.

Here to help you breathe + be.

Leona Day

July 1, 2017, was the first Leona Day. And it started as a welcoming and farewell to my daughter, born weighing almost 4 pounds at 7 months gestation. A little girl. Stillbirth.

Her due date was my birthday, making us both Leos. And from the moment I found out about her, I knew my baby was a Leo like her mom. When born, it was my dad who let the s*x out of the bag, when he said “she has red hair like you did as a baby.” That’s when I knew Leo was actually my Leona.

And as anniversaries of big events do, each year took on a different meaning revealing deeper lessons learned through the layers of life.

The first Leona Day I celebrated was spent with my mom in the mountains, taking a weekend together to honor a full year of surviving the aftermath of stillbirth and softening the shock of loss. I was still coming to terms with what had transpired, only beginning to understand its life-altering impact.

For the second Leona Day, I only knew I needed to not be at work. So I wasn’t. And this was the start of understanding that I can honor Leona by honoring myself. I began thinking of the ways I love most to fully disconnect from our “must do” culture and ease into my “love to do” heart space. And it was through this mindset shift that I was able to understand the essence of this day - slow, authentic, reflective self-care.

The third year I traveled to Florida for an Ayurvedic yoga retreat, solo. I had never traveled anywhere via plane for myself by myself simply because I wanted to. But with Leona by my side, I knew it was doable. Acceptable. Encouraged. Confidence to do big bold things felt accessible. Almost easy to claim as my own. I had had a stillbirth. Anything in comparison to that felt like a moot point.

Year four, five, and six were hikes and mini day adventures, discovering new places to travel to with Vanna and enjoy a day filled with awe and beauty.
