Did you know that not all hearing loss is the same? The type of hearing loss you have depends on what part of your hearing is damaged. There are three basic types of hearing loss:

✅ Conductive hearing loss makes it hard for sounds to get to your inner ear.
✅ Sensorineural hearing loss happens when there is damage in your inner ear.
✅ Mixed hearing loss is a problem in your outer or middle ear and in your inner ear.

Treatment will depend on the type of hearing loss you have.

✅ Moving away from sources of loud noises (such as loudspeakers).
✅ Taking a break from the noise every 15 minutes.
✅ Giving your hearing about 18 hours to recover after exposure to loud noise.

According to the World Health Organization, 1.1 billion teenagers and young adults worldwide are at risk for noise-induced hearing loss from unsafe use of audio devices.

To help avoid damaging your hearing:

✅ Use noise-canceling earphones or headphones – don't just turn the volume up to cover up outside noise
✅ Follow the 60/60 rule. The suggestion is to listen with headphones at no more than 60% volume for no more than 60 minutes a day.
✅ If possible, opt for over-the-ear headphones.

Hearing loss doesn't discriminate. It's important to speak up if you're suffering from hearing loss as it could be detrimental to your education. Teachers may not be aware of it. Be proactive. For example, if teachers are showing videos for classes, request ones with captions. Even with a mild hearing loss, it is sometimes hard to understand the words on a video, even if you hear them.
