I am thrilled to see my practice featured in Volume 9! Last night’s Palm Beach-inspired celebration was the perfect backdrop to this launch. As you can see I took this theme seriously 😎🌴

Humor aside, this is a special moment captured in my Volume 9 photo – me holding my second daughter at just 3 months old. There’s something powerful about representing my business through this authentic glimpse of my own postpartum journey. I continue to be honored to connect with and support fellow mothers in our community through the work that means so much to me!

Unfortunately, there’s a lot of misinformation floating around out there about intrusive thoughts and anxiety…

It’s extremely misunderstood.

Stop doing this! 🛑✋

Working really hard to mentally “solve” the intrusive thoughts you’re experiencing is ONLY keeping you stuck.

The CONTEXT in which you view unwanted thoughts will determine how quickly you free yourself from them. If you keep believing that the CONTENT of your thoughts is the actual problem, you will continue to inadvertently perpetuate feelings of fear and communicate your mind that you want it to keep producing the thoughts you’re trying desperately to resolve and get rid of.

There is another way!

This year I have been so honored and excited to have gotten to be a part of volume 8! I’ve loved getting to make connections with other business owners in our community that love and are passionate about what they do.

I’m thrilled to share my skills and passion for helping moms transform their relationships with their minds and emotions during such a vulnerable and often overlooked phase of life. Moms deserve to be emotionally well - and to learn that being “emotionally well” INCLUDES allowing yourself to experience any thought and any feeling - even the ones that feel most unpleasant!

“Why am I experiencing intrusive thoughts?”

For most of us, the initial response to intrusive thoughts is to figure out if we actually want what our mind is saying and then to try to get rid of/stop the intrusive thought experience.

…and we also know how it works out. Not well. This approach makes it worse.

Know this:

👉 your brain is trying to keep you and your baby safe in a really weird and distorted way

👉 your mind is mirroring the state of your nervous system

👉 stop taking your thoughts so seriously and personally because it’s about survival and not YOU.

Here’s something most therapists and coaches will never tell you…

Because they aren’t clear on this themselves.

The key to healing from your current struggle isn’t doing a bunch of stuff to try to “manage” your emotions or to try to make them go away.

The key is doing NOTHING!

Your body knows how to process emotion - and does a great job at it - when your mind stays out of the way and doesn’t interfere.

Stop doing all the things to get rid of your feelings. It doesn’t work. Bathe in the discomfort and lean into it. Your willingness to do so is directly related to how long it takes for the feeling to pass.

Remember, feelings aren’t dangerous. Anxiety and fear is safe for you to feel

The problem with PPD…

👉🏻 socially, we tend to equate uncomfortable emotion with having a disorder after having a baby (this is so false!!!)

👉🏻 PPD tends to be used as a catch-all term for all unpleasant emotional experiences postpartum, therefore “postpartum depression” has lost its true meaning

👉🏻 mental health providers as well as healthcare providers in the perinatal space seem to be reinforcing this damaging equation to their clients and patients

…. and this is only skimming the top of the problems with the current narrative around postpartum mental health.

Having a child is a major transition and developmental period for the mother. Your interpretation of your emotional experience matters.

You are not disordered because you’re experiencing emotion after having your baby. Even if you are 6 months - 1 year postpartum. Or beyond for that matter!

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but the fact that you’re experiencing unpleasant emotions or feelings that you don’t like postpartum DOES NOT MEAN that you don’t love your baby.

Actually, how bothered you are by the presence of unpleasant emotion indicates how much you value your new role and your brand new little life.

Oh, and the fact that you’re experiencing these emotions doesn’t mean that you have a disorder either.
