Divorced, my husband sarcastically threw an old pillow at meābut when I removed the cover to wash it, I was left speechless by what I found insideā¦
HĆ©ctor and I had been married for five years. From the very first day, I grew used to his cold words and distant glances. He wasnāt violent or loud, but his indifference made my heart wither a little more each day.
After the wedding, we lived in his parentsā house. Every morning, I woke early to cook, clean, and do laundry. Every night I sat waiting for him, only to hear: āYes, I already ate.ā
I often wondered, āIs this marriage any different from renting a room in a boarding house?ā I tried to build, I tried to love, but in return, I only got emptiness.
One day, he came home with a blank face, sat across from me, slid divorce papers forward, and said flatly: āSign. I donāt want to waste either of our time anymore.ā
I froze, though I wasnāt surprised. With tears in my eyes, I signed, my hand trembling. Memories of lonely dinners, nights of pain I endured alone, cut into me like deep st:abs.
Afterward, I packed my things. There was nothing in that house that truly belonged to me, except some clothesāand an old pillow I always slept with.
As I was about to walk out, HĆ©ctor tossed the pillow at me with a smirk: āTake it and wash it. Itās probably already falling apart.ā
I held the pillow, a lump in my throat. It was old, its cover faded with yellow stains and worn patches. I had brought it from my motherās home in Oaxaca when I left for college, and Iād kept it after marriage because I couldnāt sleep without it. He always complained, but I refused to let it go.
Back in my rented room, I sat staring at the pillow, thinking of his mocking words. Finally, I decided to unzip the case and wash itāat least so it would be clean, and maybe I could sleep without painful dreams.
But the moment I opened it, I felt something strange. Beneath the soft cotton was something hard. I reached inside, my heart poundingāand froze.
