The holiday season brings joy, and it also brings stress. Often we are traveling and eating (or drinking) a variety of foods we would not normally eat. There are holiday parties and gatherings, and often we are out of our normal routine. These things could make your heartburn worse!

Everyone gets bloated from time to time, but if it is a common problem you may want to find out why you are bloated.

Sometimes we get more bloated due to hormonal changes, and other times it may be because of constipation or other reasons.

There are things you can do to help decrease bloating. A combination of fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains + enough water can help get things moving and reduce constipation. Physical activity is also important.

Also, practice mindful eating which includes relaxing and eating more slowly. If you are really bloated, you may want to avoid big meals and focus on smaller meals and snacks.

Improving digestion involves eating healthy foods, staying hydrated, and getting enough fiber, but you can also do other things to improve your gut health.

Incorporate enjoyable physical activity into your routine. Go for a walk or do yard work if you find that relaxing.

Self-care is also important. Make sure you prioritize sleep and get enough rest when your body needs it.

Mindful eating can also help digestion. When we eat mindfully we relax and we eat more slowly.

It is so important to consult a dietitian when you have digestive problems like IBS. Everyone is different, and your problems deserve a specific plan.

With the FODMAP diet, often used to help those who suffer from IBS, there are many possible food triggers on the "list". The goal is to find what foods you can and cannot tolerate- you do not want to needlessly eliminate everything.

A dietitian can help guide you through this challenging process.

Also, besides food triggers, other factors affect IBS symptoms and flare-ups. A dietitian can help you make the appropriate changes so you feel better and have better control of your symptoms.

Eating plant-based foods is the best way to improve your digestive health! A variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help relieve constipation, bloating, and improve your overall digestive health.

Yogurts containing probiotics are also a great choice to keep your gut microbiome in balance.

Adding more plant-based foods to your diet doesn't have to be hard. Grab an apple (skin on) for an afternoon snack, or add fruit and nuts to your morning oatmeal for an extra fiber boost.
