Fight, flight, freeze, and fawn are 4 trauma responses. These are helpful and instinctive reactions to protect ourselves from actual danger. Similar to quickly jumping back if we are walking outside and notice a snake ahead of us.

With Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, we are more likely to view current events through the lens of trauma, leading us to perceive things inaccurately and overreact or under-react. We can get stuck in fixed ways of thinking and feeling that are more reflective of the past than the present.

Often we learn disconnecting from our own self and others is an effective way to avoid the intensity of PTSD symptoms which may mean drinking and drug use, isolation, feelings of shame, daydreaming, busying and exhausting ourself, episodes of uncontrolled rage, etc.

By strengthening the connections in our body and brain to achieving a calm state, we begin healing the trauma responses. Making small changes over and over with support and non judgement is effective to recovering from PTSD.

Whatever difficulty or problem one person might be facing, there is more to life. We are more than our anxieties and mental health symptoms, and there is a part of us that is not “damaged” and that has not been touched by trauma. This undamaged Self not only exists, but it always available to create healing.

It is not selfish to have a self.

Sometimes it is difficult to advocate for yourself during a medical appointment. Physical health is often directly related to mental health concerns. It is just as important to include mental health with primary care doctor appointments. You are paying for a service during a medical appointment and have the right to refuse if you feel this is important and supportive for you. It can be anxiety producing to be weighed for many and its healthy and empowering to decline if its not medically necessary to step on the scale. Be encouraged to make informed medical decisions and support your mental health during a physical health appointment.

This article provides support and empowerment for people and parents who would like to say "no" when they (or their child) are asked to step on the scale.

Real “self-care” isn’t always taking bubble baths, splurging on something special, or doing whatever “feels good.” It isn’t only what you do for yourself. It isn’t needed on occasions. It’s what helps you grow, heal, and feel supported. Happy Giving Season.

A list full of online learning lessons for children. The list is organized by the subject, type of skill, length of time to complete, and provides a link. (Google doc at the bottom of this post.)

Try to incorporate play while learning with children at home to engage them more and allow new experiences. With Play Therapy the goal of allowing the child to process their thoughts and speak through play. Learning is positively related with the child using their “bodies” to help their mind develop skills and learn in a more comprehensible way.

🧸Play is the children’s most natural medium of communication.

🧩Play is the concrete expression of the child and is the child’s way of coping with their world.

⚽️Child’s feelings are often inaccessible at a verbal level and play provides a means through which conflicts can be resolved and feeling can be communicated.

Positive early experiences lead to longer life expectancy, better overall health, and improved ability to manage stress. Plus, long-term social emotional capabilities are more robust when children have a chance to learn through play; form deep relationships; and when their developing brains are given the chance to grow in a nurturing, language-rich, and relatively unhurried environment.

Trauma can alter brain functioning in many ways, but three of the most important changes appear to occur in the following areas:

The prefrontal cortex (PFC), known as the “Thinking Center”
The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), known as the “Emotion Regulation Center”
The amygdala, known as the “Fear Center”

You’re not crazy, irreversibly damaged, or a bad person. Instead, you can think of a traumatized brain as one that functions differently as a result of traumatic events. And just as your brain changed in response to your past experiences with the world, it can also change in response to your future experiences. In other words, the brain is “plastic,” and changes through growth and reorganization.
