Hey all!
It’s been quite some time since I’ve posted, but for good reason! While managing a pretty full client base and my other wellness management role, I’ve also been putting a ton of time into some new certifications and I am soooo excited to be almost at the finish line of one of the BEST certifications I have ever completed. Human Movement Specialist by Brookbush Institute has challenged me in many ways these past few months but it has also reminded me that there is ALWAYS so much more to learn. This curriculum has taken me way beyond just a Personal Trainer certification to focus more on corrective exercises for individuals dealing with past/present injury and/or pain management. In no way does this certification come close to touching the lines of physical therapy or professional intervention, but it is giving me so much more understanding of not just what the root cause of physical limitation and pain is, but how to get in to some of those important and vulnerable spaces of the human body to correct impaired movement patterns and restore the body to better function. In fact, this certification is shifting my focus a bit to really wanting to connect with individuals who seek to improve physical health through optimizing better movement patterns while reducing pain. I can’t wait to see what comes next - I’ll keep you posted and will let you know when my certification is complete - 12 credits to go!! 👏👏👏

As a personal trainer, initial consultations are arguably the most crucial part of establishing a good relationship with prospective clients and creating a successful plan together. Not only is our initial conversation important, what might be just as valuable (or even more so??) is what the body tells us in motion through our initial movement screenings. The body always tells a story and can reveal some important strategies in not only setting up exercise programs but in creating injury prevention strategies also. Could the way we move be setting us up for injury? Could jumping into an exercise program unknowingly sideline our fitness goals? Sometimes it’s just not reasonable to assign exercise without assessing movement first. My number one goal as a trainer is to effectively progress towards fitness goals without aggravating or creating injury- and that often requires the addition of some injury management and prevention exercises into the plan.

I currently only have two spots available for new clients- if you or someone you know is interested in getting together for a casual conversation of how we could work together, let me know! I’m here and ready for that conversation anytime! ☺️💪

25 years ago today God showed me my purpose here on this earth.

I’ll say it again- you changed me and you saved me, Miss Mavis. Happy Birthday, my girl. ❤️
(Thank you to the incredible Nikki Johnson for creating this masterpiece to commemorate this 25th birthday).

Am I starting a new routine today? Sort of... but there’s kind of a strategy behind that. December is always a magical month for me, consumed by the holiday festivities and Christmas spirit. I don’t fall away from my health and fitness goals entirely, but I do get a little more relaxed on my eating habits, and while I still hit my workouts (mostly), they are less focused and more rushed than usual. I am distracted by the excitement of the season, but more importantly, I realize that I need the disruption in my routine. I am the kind of person who constantly seeks change, and need to have breaks in habit and behaviors... so yes, come January I love the feeling of refreshing my focus and resetting my intentions. My brain and my body absolutely love the reset, and as long as I’m still going in March, July, October, etc. (though my workouts look different depending on the season), I feel great with a break in my routine. But that’s just how it works for me....
What are your behavior patterns? What works best for you? Fit your health and fitness goals into what works best for your personality and behaviors and you’re one step closer to total success and consistent results!

Whether you believe in New Year's resolutions or not is totally up to you- none of my business, or anyone else's for that matter. Personally, I think a resolution of any kind at any time can be a very good thing... I'm just not crazy about putting all those expectations into a specific time of year without taking into account whether it's actually a good time for you to take on that commitment for change. It could be a set up for failure if you're not ready to put the work and energy in, but if you're prepared and ready for it, it just might be the change that sets you up for positive and lasting success. It's about readiness to change with a committed mindset and a prepared game plan, and not so much about the date on the calendar. If you're ready to take it on, then go for it! But take inventory of where you are at and what you are ready for- see the long road and understand the commitment it will take if you decide to take the dive into a New Year's resolution.

Either way, Happy New Year to you- wishing peace, health and prosperity to you in 2021!

THIS. ALL OF THIS.

I can count on one hand (maybe even finger) how many times I have added burpees into a client’s workout. As a trainer, it’s my job to think deeper and more intentionally about what is best for a client, how to get them to their goals, and most importantly- above all else- do everything necessary to avoid injury. I’m not saying burpees have no place in exercise classes or programs, but typically in a training session they are just a cheap throw in exercise with no real value other than to say you kicked your client’s ashh in any given workout, and that’s just not what being a responsible trainer is always about (not talking about fitness class instructors, that’s a different ballgame). There are better and smarter ways to get results, and the role of a trainer is ALWAYS about being intentional and responsible with a client’s workouts and physical abilities.

Jackfruit “BBQ” sandwich with cucumbers and plant-based queso. This. Was. Delicious!

All it takes is a slight shift of the needle to discover a whole new way to enjoy food in a different way. At 50, I need to think differently and eat differently than I used to. I’ve said it before- we ought to pull out the health and nutrition blueprint from time to time and take a look at what changes need to happen based on where we are at and what has changed in our ‘foundation’. I’ve been exploring a bit with plant- based eating, just as an option for feeling less bloating, inflammation, etc. and I must say it’s been helping quite a bit. It’s not for everyone, but the point is... take a peek at your blueprint and assess whether it’s time for a change in your plan. Good things happen when intentional change leads you in a new and healthier direction!

And oh by the way, this plant-based queso is my new addiction! Brand is Good Foods and it is so so delish- go get you some at Costco!
